S: Vacation 2009 - Scotland

BC: Home again! It was a wonderful vacation and I am already looking forward to the next one.

FC: Vacation 2009 | Belgium Scotland Holland

We started the vacation by taking it easy for a few days. Walking Roy along The Dijle, admiring the beautiful homes along the way and ending up doing a "terraske" with a nice cup of coffee or a delicious glass of wine. | Muizen

We got on the ferry "The Pride of York" at around 5 pm from the port of Zeebruge in Belgium and got to the Port of Hull in England the next day at 9 am. It was like a mini cruise. The food was excellent, & the entertainment was great.

A delicious all you can eat buffet and a final nightcap to end the day. | Good night Herman & Didi. It was fun sharing a cabin. But none of us got a very good night's sleep. The ship rolled around a lot and it was very hot in the cabin.

First stop was the City of York. | "Yorkish" Starbucks

We had a wonderful picnic in a beautiful park. | Vanessa taking pictures of the swans.

On the road again! | Sisters! | We see our first castle! | Everywhere we went we would see miles & miles of walls all made out of stone. Most of the roads we drove on for the next 2 weeks looked like the one above.

Beautiful buildings everywhere! | Stirling, Scotland. We went to visit the jail & it was very interesting.

This is a croft, where the peasants used to live. People still live in them and the roofs are made out of dirt & mud & there is grass growing on them. | This is the first little cottage we rented. It had 3 bedrooms and was very comfortable. These are some of the views we got to enjoy every day while coming or going back to our little home away from home..

These brochs are fascinating. It's hard to believe that people actually lived in these. And this one is 2300 years old!

Stirling Castle, is one of the largest and most important castles, both historically and architecturally, in Scotland. Several Scottish Kings and Queens have been crowned at Stirling, including Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1543. | 1826 ! | Here lie Witze & Wannes. A few minutes of peace & quiet!

Loch Lomand | One thing about Scotland is that there are a lot of castles and Lochs everywhere. Beautiful scenery wherever you look!. | Stirling Castle

Hiking | A little rain never hurt anyone!

Loch Lomond | Every where we went, Didi was always collecting rocks. Luckily we weren't traveling by plane

 Falkirk

We went to visit the Falkirk Wheel which was very interesting. It is actually a rotating boat lift located in Scotland in the city of Falkirk. It connects two canals and was opened in 2002. Before that they had 11 locks that connected the canals. A boat goes into the lift at each level. Then the wheel rotates and the boat on the upper level comes out on the bottom and the bottom boat ends up on top. There was a very nice visitor's center a beautiful park and interesting sculptures. | Wheel

Now this is what I call hiking. In some places you could hardly see the path. | Picnic in style

Every time we visited a castle we had to hike there. Even though most of the castles were nothing but ruins they all had very well maintained gardens. | Highland cows.

A picture is worth a thousand words!

We went to visit a factory where they blow glass into amazing artwork.

 Drummond Castle | Spectacular garden!

Isle of Skye | We didn't see the Loch Ness Monster.

Urquhart Castle | The picturesque ruins of Urquhart Castle are situated 2 miles from Drumnadrochit on a rocky peninsula on the banks of Loch Ness. | Built some time in the 1200's

We took a boat ride to the Isle of Skye. We could see castles in the background and sea lions basking in the sun. It was a glass bottom boat and we got to go down a see lots of seaweed and the occasional jellyfish.

SKYE | It was strange to see a castle in the middle of downtown where all the buildings were modern. | After a long day of sight seeing, this is the view on the way to our little cottage.

 Portree

 Ferry ride to Skye

This was a super long hike. Paul & Vanessa wanted to make it to the top, but it was a 6 hr. hike so after about hiking an hour in, us old folks turned around and went home to get dinner started.

Didi doing some rock climbing, look at the agony she's in! | Vanessa taking pictures | Here Didi is trying to show off her rock climbing skills. Luckily you can't see her feet, because they are on the ground and she's just leaning against the rock.

 Old Man of Storr

Every day ended with a spectacular sunset | Wild berries picked in the field behind the cottage. | This is the second cottage we rented. If you looked out the window in the morning you would see deer in the field.

Miscellaneous shots taken during our daily walks. I loved the bright colors and the flowers everywhere.

Carlisle | We spent the night at a little bed & breakfast in Carlisle before returning to Hull to catch the ferry back to Zeebruge. We had dinner at Casa Romana a fabulous Italian restaurant,

 Hadrian's Wall

Family | C o n v i e | It was nice to see Tante Angele and most of the cousins again. It was a beautiful day and suddenly it started to hail. Hail as big as golf balls covered the lawn in just minutes.

DELFT | A charming city where many buildings are painted the traditional Delft blue. Canals every where. Restaurants on boats, and the biggest problem seems to be finding a parking spot for your bike.

This is a picture that is approx 6' x 3' Check out that price tag! The original of every plate ever made is in one of the show room

Inside the factory. We watched them make the porcelain and paint them by hand. All the pieces are hand painted. All original Delft is stamped.

 D E N | H A A G | Our hotel | Down town where old & new coexist in peace.

 Scheveningen

Beelden aan Zee ("Pictures at sea") museum in the Scheveningen district of The Hague, founded in 1994, is the only Dutch museum that is devoted exclusively to sculpture. | Tom Otterness. sculpture garden. | We spent a wonderful day at the beach. The weather was perfect. As you can see the sand is just covered with sea shells, which made it kind of hard to walk with no shoes.
