FC: February 27, 2009 | Blais
The Invitation In the presence of our friends and loved ones we will exchange vows of marriage and celebrate a life complete with love, laughter, and strength. Please join us as we Norma Brewer & Garth Blais begin our new life together on Friday, February 27th, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. Rocky Ridge Ranch Calgary, Alberta
The Ceremony by friend and Pastor Kathleen Gilhooly | Garth's vows: Because of you I laugh, I smile, I dare to dream again. I look forward with great joy to spending the rest of my life with you, caring for you, nurturing you, being there for you in all life has for us. I vow to be true and faithful. These things I give to you today, and all the days of my life.
Norma's vows: Today I give myself to you in marriage. I promise to encourage and inspire you, to laugh with you and to comfort you in times of sorrow and struggle. I promise to love you in good times and in bad, when life seems easy and when it seems hard, when our love is simple, and when it is an effort. I promise to cherish you, and to always hold you in highest regard. These things I give to you today, and all the days of my life.
... you have verbally given your word to each other and chosen to seal your vows by the exchanging of rings. Your rings are a symbol of completeness. As a ring has no end so your love for each other should have no end. As often as either of you see them, may you be reminded of this moment, and the endless love you have promised to each other.
Today we share our love ... Heaven's precious gift to us.
"Believe in happily ever after, and it will come true"
I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go And help us to be wise, in times when we don't know Let this be our prayer, as we go our way Lead us to a place, guide us with your grace To a place where we'll be safe.

Excerpts from The Love Story by Pastor Gilhooly Every wedding day begins with a love story. It was a regular night at the Calgary Police Service chorus when an announcement was made that a new tenor was coming. Norma didn't pay much attention when he walked in. He was introduced around the group, but her only thought was she hoped he could sing. The tenor no longer worked night shift so it seemed the time was right for him to join the chorus. After a performance in Kananaskis an attractive female named Norma noticed Garth was sitting alone and came over to have a friendly chat. He had already noticed her, of course, as she is kind of hard to miss, and began to look forward to every practice for more reasons than his love of music. A few weeks later Mr. Tenor whispered in her ear, "You look very pretty." Smooth. She looked around. "Is he talking to me?" she wondered. Yes, he was, and she said thank you. As "fate" would have it they were side by side and had to hold hands, and Mr. T decided to give her hand a little squeeze. | Norma thought perhaps she had imagined it and wondered if he had also squeezed the hand of the person on the other side. She looked over, saw Mike, and decided it was unlikely. The next day Norma found a flowered note stuck on her front door. It said, "I hoped I'd find you home, love Garth." It seemed the hand squeeze was not just her imagination after all. Well, like all great love stories their first real conversation took place in the perfect setting, the parking lot of a senior's home. So romantic. They stood by their cars ... no, wait, it gets better ... while Charity listened and patiently waited. Norma finally had to leave as Tiffany was about to bring Gino into the world. That first conversation was the beginning of many long conversations about life and death, marriage, their past, present, and dreams for the future, politics, religion, and sports. It was then that Norma learned that hockey has periods, not quarters or innings, and it was that day that Garth knew Norma was a gift from God. He remembered the night he had squeezed her hand, but that evening he knew he wanted to hold her hand, he knew he wanted to part of her life forever.
Garth already knew and liked Charity. Now there was a new baby coming and he knew he wanted to be part of this baby's life too. As wonderful as that night had seemed, it was bitter sweet, for the timing of this relationship was not right. For six months they had no further contact. Norma was all that Garth thought about; she was the one he wanted to be with. He knew he loved her and that one day they would be together, but he also knew he had to wait. Norma hoped that one day it would turn out, but was forced to embrace her freedom and move on. She had occasional dates, followed by an e-mail to me which usually went something like this: well, he had lots of money, but he's not Garth. He was really good looking, but he's not Garth. He was kind, but he's not Garth. He was very generous, but he's not Garth. He was very funny, but he's not Garth." Norma knew that Garth had those qualities she respected, and was also impressed by the love and respect Garth had for his children. He was so proud of their achievements and the young men they had become. She saw a gentle side in his love for his boys and loved him even more. The bar had been set so high no one else could reach it. | The good news was that in January 2008, on a Calgary kind of cold, minus 30 day, Norma's furnace broke. Garth had recently started e-mailing her again and she happened to tell him she was freezing. As luck would have it, he knew how to fix furnaces. Since she was on a roll she decided to let him know that her computer wasn't working either. He said he could fix that too, which was also a false representation because he brought a co-workers along to fix that. Mr. Tenor and Norma re-connected and realized for certain that they were the answer to each other's prayers. Garth met Tiffany and Bethany and found they were as fantastic as Charity. Norma was nervous about having Garth come to church with her as it was such an important part of her life. What if he didn't like it? No need to worry, as he quickly became part of her church family. Garth fell in love with her kids, her grandchildren, her parents, her friends, and her God. Finally after a decade of loneliness Garth had found the right person, the one he wanted to grow old with ... he was finally holding the hand he wanted to hold, not only hold but squeeze every day!
