S: My life as a slave!

BC: We are all people and we are all FOREVER FREE!!!

FC: My life as a slave!

1: I lived on Madison Avenue, I was brought here In chains. I done every thing from cooking to working in the fields and doing everyones laundry. Some of the hardest things was when the owner got tired of me and my kids so they sent us to another owner and split us up.

2: My escape was long hard! I decided to flee because I knew that finding my kids was a sign from God and that was enough for me to want to take the risk of fleeing, but I know he wants and wanted a better life for me and my kids. I traveled by going with the Underground Railroad with Harriet Tubman as leader. I survived by just getting by on what ever I could find around me even though I just could make myself eat it but I knew I had to if I wanted to live to see a better life. Sometimes I caught my self wondering if God still sees and hears me. I was so tired and so worried about being caught or losing my kids all over again. While I was fleeing I had a accident and broke both my legs but they were nice enough to wait on me.

3: Some people I came across was really nice but with others I wasn't so lucky. Some helped me hide, some helped me flee, while others left me stranded helpless and hopeless. There was a secret way to get north and there would be many paths to go on. Most of the beginning slaves would be met by Harriet Tubman and either she would lead them herself or tell them where they could run to. The first stop usually was a abolitionist house in disguise. The people who would take care of, hide, and feed the slaves would have a lantern in their window to show them that they were friends. So over all the white Northerners sheltered, hid, fed, and pointed them to the next stop so they could make it north or where ever they were going.. Also note that with out these white Abolitionist (mostly the Quakers) there would not have been an Underground Railroad

4: After I reached freedom I was so relieved and dumbfounded because I never knew that freedom wasn't all that free although we still had rules it was no where near as bad as where I was before I started my "adventure" to freedom. I settled in North Carolina. I picked it because I had heard so much about it growing up and from the people that I was with while I was a slave and I had always wanted to go, also because some friends went to North Carolina before I did. I found out that it was hard to find a job but living paycheck to paycheck was better than nothing. I felt kinda guilty because I had to leave so many people behind but I came to see very quickly that it was so much better than living in slavery (just about any thing is better than that)

6: The time around the Civil War was more frighting than your biggest fear because it's so dangerous but in all honesty I really didn't care when the south succeeded because I was just so happy to still be alive. No one to my memory fought in the war not that they didn't love their country it was just that they were to afraid and the ones that would fight their masters wouldn't let them. I don't really have that many feeling about Abraham Lincoln any more I used to have mixed feelings about him but I let them all go so I could move on with a healthy and happy life with my kids. I was so glad when the war was over and slavery was finally abolished...I mean wouldn't you be too?

7: I still live in North Carolina and my kids are all grown but we are still FREE!!! I am so glad I got out when I did, otherwise I would not have made it. I am now 78 my birthday is Febuary 27th. I am retired now and have 7 grandkids and my son is a preacher and my daughter is a nurse. I am still serving God through it all because he is the one who helped me because I know I couldn't have done it with out him.

8: Special thanks to: Mrs. Melody Stinson for assigning this project and seeing me all the way through to the end. I would also like to thank all my friends and family but one specific friend: Jessie Fowler, because with out her there's no way that I would have been able to finish | Jessie you are my rock I love you with all my heart thanks for all you do and for always being my sister even though you know everything about me | Mrs. Stinson you are an amazing teacher and I know I can always count on you P.S.
