1: WHAT IS NUCLLEAR ENERGY? | Nuclear energy is electricity created and generated by nuclear power plants. | Nuclear energy is created in two ways, fission and fusion.

2: The process of fission is when one nucleus with a heavy mass splits into two, thus creating a nuclear reaction generating energy.

3: The process of fusion is when two nuclei combine and form one nucleus, also creating a nuclear reaction generating energy.

7: The nuclear energy is generated by using uranium. The uranium is placed in the reactor and the atoms will split, the split of the atoms will create energy. This energy created by the uranium is then used to heat up water, until it turns into steam. The steam will then push turbines which cause coils of wires to make contact with a magnetic field, this creates an electric current.

8: PICKERING NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

9: The method of generating energy using nuclear power plants is very popular. Many places around the world use nuclear power plants to create nuclear energy, one of them being Pickering, Ontario. In Pickering, Ontario there is a nuclear power plant. This power plant is located on the shore of Lake Ontario. The Pickering Power Plant generates electricity for Ontario. This is a real life example of a nuclear power plant generating nuclear energy.

10: SHORT TERM EFFECTS | With nuclear energy there are no short term effects, because once the radiation is exposed to the environment you cannot get rid of it. Which means it is a long term effect.

11: Long TERm effects | Radiation could also be a long term effect on the environment. This is because if radiation is exposed you cannot get rid of it. Radiation will also spread and will be impossible to stop the spreading of it.

12: Generating electricity by nuclear power plants come with great risk. The radiation that the uranium releases can cause immediate death or cancer for humans.

13: Wild life can also be affected by radiation. If radiation is exposed to areas with wild life, the radiation will kill it instantly, and that area with radiation will never be able to grow vegetation again and no animals will be able to live in that area. Animals being exposed to radiation can also mutate them. They will develop unnatural features.

14: Nuclear energy could be very, very dangerous if not handled properly. If a nuclear plant accident occurs then there would be a huge problem. The radiation is very dangerous, if you are exposed to it you can instantly die or you can get cancer.

15: There are benefits of generating and using nuclear energy. For example, generating nuclear energy does not contribute to the greenhouse gases. This can create electricity, which we all need, without polluting the atmosphere.

16: There is one major issue with using nuclear energy, and that is the disposing of the uranium. | After using the uranium it becomes highly dangerous, because it gives off a lot of radiation. If the uranium is not stored and disposed properly it can cause a lot of harm to our earth. | DISPOSAL.

17: Right now the uranium that has been used is buried deep into the crust of the earth. They have to bury it deep because the uranium cannot be exposed to heat. If the uranium is exposed to heat, it will release a lot of radiation. This is the big issue, because the earth is heating up and if the heat gets to the uranium, the radiation will be released everywhere. Also where ever the uranium is buried, no vegetation can grow due to the radiation.

18: One of the most popular and recent nuclear meltdowns occurred in Japan. There was an 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan, this earthquake shut down the reactors of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. | This was a huge problem, because the radiation was released. This meltdown killed many. Some men sacrificed their life in order to save the others.

20: Another nuclear meltdown occurred in Ukraine, it was the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. It was an explosion and fire that caused the nuclear meltdown. This nuclear disaster released a lot of radiation into our atmosphere. | This accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, and killed 30 people within three months.
