4: Humpback whale- Megaptera novaengliae Length- 35-50 ft females are larger than most males Weight- 25-40 tons Range- all major oceans Type- mid-size Baleen whales that travel in the summer months

5: Facts: The humback whale gets their name from the small hump on their back located just in front of their small fin. The flippers are the longest of any whale reaching up to 15 feet. They have anywhere from 270-400 baleen plates on each side of their mouth. The humpback whale eats krill and small schooling fish including herring, sand lance, and mackerel.

8: Minke whale-Baleanoptera acutorostrata Length- 30-35 feet females are larger than most males Weight- 20,000 LBS Range- all major oceans Type of whale- minke whales are the smallest of the baleen whales found in our region

9: & | Facts: The Minke whale has a small, curved, dorsal fin along with a small pectoral fin. Nickname- "little piked whale" because they are found alone, not in a crowd, and they are very quick. For a long time they were too small to hunt but as numbers of larger whales declined,whalers turned to these small whales. Hunted today by Japan, Norway, and Iceland. The body is dark gray on top and white underneath.

12: Fin or Fin back whale- Balaenoptera physalus Length- 80 feet with females larger than males Weight- 60-85 tons Range- all major oceans Second largest animal to ever live on earth. The fin whale has a "V" shaped chevron pattern and lines of gray located behind it's blow holes.

13: Facts: 260-480 baleen plates are on each side of their mouth. The finback whale can go up to 30 MPH in a short burst of speed. The fin whales feed on krill and small school fish including herring, sand lance, and mackerel.

16: Right whale- North Atlantic- Eubalaena glalcialis Length- 50-60 feet with females larger than males. The right whale is a mid-size baleen whale. Weight- 200,000 LBS Range- Nova Scotia to Florida, Southern Iceland, and Norway to Spain. Most endangered mammals in the world.

17: Facts: The Fin whales have small paddle shaped flippers, a large head that is covered with callosities (raised rough patches of skin) a deeply notched tail, and no dorsal fin. Found on Cape Cod in winter and spring, The Bay of Fundy in the summer, and off Florida and Georgia in the winter. Right whales have baleen reaching longer than any other whale; 9 feet in length. Population consists of 300 individuals. The name came from the fact that they were the right whale to hunt.
