3: Sometime in the mid-fifties Aon & Pop (Leon & Tom Wood, Mom's parents) went on vacations out west and to visit friends in Panama | Riding mules down into the Grand Canyon!

Cuban revolutionaries including Fidel Castro land in Cuba at the start of the Cuban Revolution. Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 signed into law on 29th June for the construction of 41,000 miles of interstate highways over a 20-year period. "Diamonds Are Forever" is published by Ian Fleming. "My Fair Lady" opens on Broadway starring Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins. "Guys and Dolls " "The King and I" First hard disk (5MB) invented by IBM. 9: University Baptist Church, Coral Gables, Florida was very important to our family. The church was begun in 1926 our family attended there from when I was on the cradle roll. 16: 1957 1957 saw the continued growth of bigger taller tail fins on new cars and more lights, bigger with more powerful engines and an average car sold for $2,749. The Soviet Union launched the first space satellite Sputnik 1. Movies included "Twelve Angry Men" and "The Bridge Over the River Kwai", and TV showed "Perry Mason" and "Maverick" for the first time. The music continued to be Rock and Roll with artists like "Little Richard". The popular toys were Slinkys and Hula Hoops. The continued growth of the use of credit was shown by the fact that 2/3 of all new cars were bought on credit. 17: Our House 6502 SW 64 St Miami, Florida This is where I lived from age 6 until I married at age 22. The house was located in South Miami It had terrazzo floors and jalousie windows. My room was the one on the far left, in front! The patio seen in one picture was added on and later it became a screened in porch.
19: My grandfather Pop and some friends owned a fishing cabin in the Ten Thousand Islands. It was a former ice house used by fishermen. The Ten Thousand Islands is the coastal area in the Everglades National Park where mangrove islands and shallow creeks make a wilderness maze. The 'islands' are a labyrinth of water and mangroves. Some of the islands are landmasses called keys but many are clumps of mangrove trees rising out of coral reefs, oyster beds, and sandy shoals. The area lies southeast of Naples and northwest of the Everglades National Park. The many islands form a transition from the freshwater marsh of the "river of grass" to the open salt water of the Gulf of Mexico.

27: 1958 Inflation dipped below 2% in 1958 so those in work earning the average wages of $3,851 per year were quite well off. Cars continued to get bigger and heavier with larger engines, but imports continued to grow now with the added Datsun and more Toyotas from Japan. America's first satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral. This is also the year that the Microchip was first developed which is the very early stages of PC's we all now use at work and at home. Elvis Presley is inducted into the Army. The Wham-O company introduces the Hula Hoop; over 100 million are sold. 30: When I was 6 I became very ill and was in the hospital for several weeks. They still arent' sure what was wrong! I spent Easter there and received a visit from the Easter Bunny and a very large basket! | Armed Forces Day at the Homestead Air Force Base | Tommy & I with John, Debbie & Suzan Mullikin in our little backyard pool.

32: We had gone to Rock City, TN in an earlier year...without Tommy who was at camp. We went back this time...with Tommy! Fairyland Caverns were a big deal this time. The swinging bridge was always exciting!

45: In April Aunt Mary T Wood, Pop's sister who had Cerebral Palsy, died of burns | Also in April we went to Orlando to visit family and meet the newest member Morrie, son of Dad's brother Gene and his wife Mary. The top picture shows Uncle Lee Abbott, Nana and Morrie. The bottom picture shows Tommy & Me with Peggy Lee, Kathy & Pat Abbott, our cousins.
46: KEY BISCAYNE Some friends let us use their house on Key Biscayne in the summer. We would go with John, Betty, Alice and Jean Fatool and stay for a week. Our dads would "commute" to work!

50: Mom and Dad & Aon and Pop decided to take the Cabin Cruiser on a little trip - to Bimini! They were part of a big flotilla of boats.

52: They enjoyed their time in Bimini, but decided to come back early...without the rest of the boats and the Coast Guard. They encountered a storm along the way and almost didn't make it back.
53: Our boat was moored at a motel on a river in Coral Gables. Because of that we also were able to use their pool! (left & below) Right - 2 new haircuts
