Buffalo's Backyard Birds n' Bugs 2013 Wall Calendar - Page Text Content

Dec 2013: DECEMBER

Dec 2013: Remember Pretty Birdy? She's all grown up now! In her early months, she looked a bit rough around the edges, but she's grown into her beautiful, golden adult feathers - and seems to have found a mate! | This Cardinal chick was featured in 2012: found stranded on a fence after a hawk attacked the nest and she fell to the ground, she was precariously reunited with her poppa 20 hours later having endured a wet, stormy night filled with thunder and lightning.

Nov 2013: NOVEMBER

Nov 2013: Chickadee stops for a water break.

Oct 2013: OCTOBER

Oct 2013: Despite days of whipping winds and nights of bitter cold, and despite the tattered state of her web, spider swells larger and larger.

Sep 2013: Wait for it... wait for it... Mourning Cloak suns and stretches on the mesh of a bird food sock. | Put your left wing in, take your left wing out, put your left wing in and shake it all about... same branch, different day... different Chickadee?

Aug 2013: AUGUST

Aug 2013: Mr. and Mrs. Woodpecker (far left, left) alternate turns at the suet feeder. | Monarch rests on a huge maple leaf, then flutters to a birch leaf for his next nap. Better camouflage from a camera's view?

Jul 2013: JULY

Jul 2013: After a bath in a shallow dish on the porch, Chickadee grooms and does a little dance nearby. | Put your right wing in, take your right wing out, put your right wing in and shake it all about...

Jun 2013: JUNE

Jun 2013: "Maybe she can't see me if I can't see her..." | A solo Heron spots a garden koi pond below and drops in on a neighbor's roof to calculate how to reach it. He knows how to land, but his wing span is too wide for him to take off from a backyard pond with any loot.

May 2013: MAY

May 2013: Blue Jay can't hide; Starling, above, tries another angle. The Dragonfly at left rests on the garden soil for quite some time before flying off.

Apr 2013: APRIL

Apr 2013: It remains to be seen if the activity at right should have been stopped. Below, Hawk monitors again, still from a distance. At left, Starling shows his stars - and his bloomers!

Mar 2013: MARCH

Mar 2013: Cardinal, above, and Grackle, left, vie for the suet; taking turns and not actually feeding together. In the far corner, a fleeting visit from Scarlet Tanager is a delightful surprise!

Feb 2013: FEBRUARY

Feb 2013: The young, male Cardinal's tail-feathers seem to wave in the breeze. Robin Red-breast visits early and often - and even noisily - but never for an unobstructed shot.

Jan 2013: JANUARY

Jan 2013: Hawk, left, keeps an eye on the yard; Chickadee poses in the cold. Below, a slushy, rainy day brings Nuthatch to the porch for a bite.
