How Does Acid Rain Form? | This picture shows how Acid Rain is formed. The 2 gases: Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide (SO2 and NOx). These gases go up through the atmosphere and mix with Hydrogen and Oxygen, (H2O and O2) causing a chemical reaction. This reaction creates acidic particles, gases, snow and rain, as shown below.

How are animals affected by Acid Rain? | Acid Rain affects all animals, but aquatic animals are the most affected because when it rains, the acid in the rain drains into the water, which kills most of the plants in and around the river/lake/wetland. Not only does it KILL the plants, it also destroys tiny parasites and bugs, along with injuring many animals, like this otter to the right.

How Does Acid Rain Affect Aquatic Animals? | This chart represents the different pH levels these different aquatic species can survive to. | When there is no life left in a lake or river is look so clear and that is because of there is no life left in the lake or river because of the effect of the acid rain.

Acid rain can wreck the plants and habitats of all animals. This can eliminate certain species that live in those habitats. It can also be a threat to forests all around the world, whether big or small, significant or insignificant, live or destroyed. There are a lot of forests that have been destroyed or partly destroyed because acid rain that has fallen on it. The acid in the moisture(in this case, water) seeps into the soil and destroys all the nutrients in it. It also leaves behind aluminum in the soil, making in it hard for the plants to grow. With it, the acid melts off a thick layer from the leaves which conserves the trees warmth and nutrients, gradually killing it. | How Does Acid Rain Affect the Environment?

How does Acid Rain affect humans? | For some, acid rain makes their asthma worse. For other's, it irritates their skin and causes a rash. But there is one thing that everybody agrees with: acid rain causes damage to everyone. Acid rain kills food on farms, melts the sides of houses and burns your clothes. Lots of money is spent to fix buildings, buy more food from other countries and to buy new clothes. Acid Rain can cause a lot of damage to our surroundings. It can even wreck some of the buildings around us over time. When this happens the damage can be minor or major. Some times it wreck important statues that can't be replaced. However, we cause acidic rain.

What can WE do to help? | We can help prevent acid rain by trying to ride your bike to school/work, or if your out of the community where you work/go to school, try taking a bus or train. Compacting people in some sort of transit helps to prevent the amount of sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides. Also, reusing goods such as toys, plastic bags etc. is another helpful way to prevent acid rain because factories produce the nasty gases that cause acid rain and snow. It also causes acidic particles and gases.
