1: FOODS & DRINKS
2: TheAnglo-Saxon culture used many of the food stuffs that are in use today although they had a different way of using them. Food was cooked over fire in the middle of the house. Meat was roasted and eaten with bread which was the constant of their daily diet.
3: Meat,stews,soups,broths,and pottages were all popular dishes on the dining table. The dishes that they prepared were extremely delicious and nourishing products that employed the finest meats, grains, fruits, and vegetables.
4: Farming played a major part in the Anglo-Saxons eating habits. The crops that were most commonly grown were wheat, oats, rye, and barely (both as a cereal and as a base for beer.) Peas, beans, carrots, cabbage, onions, apples, cherries, and plums were the vegetables and fruits grown by the Saxons because thats all they were familiar with.Pigs were a major food animal, so were cattle, goats, and sheep.
5: The Saxon culture had a recipe for every meal prepared. Their recipes consisted of unique ingredients that are a lot different from the ways that we prepare our foods today. Most meals were prepared using wine,honey,herbs, savory sauces, and contained a vegetable. They also baked a lot of different pies.
6: Most Anglo- Saxons were vegetarians because they could not get meat very often. Although wild animals were common they could only be killed by the people who owned land.
7: The Saxons drank ale and mead which is a kind of beer made with sweet honey. Beer was often drunk instead of water because the waters were polluted. Wine was imported but only drunk by the rich. They also drank fruit juices made from apples, pears, and plums.
