3: Once upon a time in a land far away, there lived a king named Hrothgar. He was old and wise, and ruled happily in Denmark with his warriors, with whom he would party and feat in his giant mead-hall called Herot. Here he and his warriors would hear eat and drink and dance, and hear stories told by scops. But not everybody was happy during these feasts. Deep in the swamps lived a horrible demon named Grendel. The sound of laughter angered Grendel, and every so often when the warriors were at play, he would attack Herot, kidnapping the warriors and gobbling them up in his den. King Hrothgar feared that no one would stop the monster. Of course, heroes exist for this very reason. Soon a brave Geatish warrior heard of this tragedy. The warrior, who was named Beowulf, traveled across the sea to Denmark to accept the challenge of defeating Grendel.
5: Beowulf promised to slay the evil beast. King Hrothgar, overjoyed, threw a large banquet in his honor. But soon Grendel came lurking towards Herot, hungry for human meat. Beowulf leaps into battle, but found his sword useless against the demon. "If weapons, don't work, I'll used my hands", cried the fearless Beowulf, throwing himself at Grendel. Although the monster had the advantage in size, Beowulf was cunning and strong. He grabbed hold of the beast's arm and pulled it right off. Beowulf carried the giant hand to the King as a trophy. Grendel ran away to the swamps, never to harm another person again.
7: But Beowulf's work was not over yet. Tales were told about a she-creature that lived in the bottom of the deepest waters. This monster was Grendel's mother: she was angry over the loss of her son, and sought revenge. Beowulf traveled underwater for hours to defeat her. He found her in her underwater cavern. Although she was a dangerous foe, she left Beowulf with the key to his victory: in her lair hung a huge sword, crafted by giants. Beowulf swung the mighty sword with all of his strength and defeated the hag. The citizens were safe from monsters, and Beowulf returned a hero.
9: Everybody's story must one day come to an end, even heroes who were once strong and undefeatable. Many years later, as an old king himself, Beowulf fought his final battle. When rumors of a ferocious dragon begin to arise, old Beowulf set out with his dear friend Wiglaf to battle it. Beowulf had lost none of his courage during the years, but eh had lost his strength. The terrible lizard defeated Beowulf with its flaming breath. But Beowulf's friend Wiglaf would not let him die in vain. He and his men fought and ended the dragon. Wiglaf became a new hero, soon to do as many brave deeds as Beowulf once did.
