FC: The Civil War
The North and the South are both regions in the United States. Even though they were both part of the U.S., they were quite different. For example, the South had slaves and wanted all the U.S. to have them, but the North hated slavery altogether and wanted to abolish it.
The North and The South argued over what to do about slavery. Finally, Henry clay came up with a compromise. The South could have slaves in Missouri, but not in Mine. He also divided the U.S in half. The South could have slaves on it's half, but the North was a no-slavery zone.
Frederick Douglas was in a group of abolitionists who wanted to put an end to slavery. Frederick told the North about how bad slavery is. He convinced the North that South must stop having slaves. The abolitionists began to lead slaves to freedom in the Underground Railroad.
North and South began to argue about slavery again. Henry Clay convinced the fighting sides to agree to the Compromise of 1850. South agreed to let North have California. North agreed to return all runaway slaves in the Fugitive Slave Act even though most Northerners disapproved of this act.
Congress added Kansas to the U.S.A. They said that whoever moved their and voted most would determine if slavery was allowed. South claimed it got their first, but North said the South went before they were allowed to go. They had a bloody fight. Abolitionists were arrested in Lawrence, and John Brown and his accomplices killed 5 slave owners.
Abraham Lincoln believed he could solve their problem. He would allow South to have slaves in the states that it already has. However South wasn't allowed to spread slavery any further. South was furious and seceded from the Union and became the Confederate States of America.
