FC: A Journey of 60 Years | Happy Birthday Caryl

Mom, Happy 60th Birthday! "It is good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters, in the end." - Ursula K. LeGuin - I look forward to seeing what new and exciting journeys you embark on in this next stage of your life. "Roots nourish, give us life and bind us safely to earth. Plant them well." - Anonymous - I am so glad you are my mom. You are the best anyone could ask for. Thank you for always being there for me, and teaching me the tools to use in my life. I'm very grateful for all you have done for me and taught me. "Love cures people - both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it." - Karl Menninger - I'm very impressed and proud of how many lives you have touched with your caring - whether it is our little family, extended family, your friends, coworkers, or patients. "One day at a time - this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone." - Ida Scott Taylor - Live in the now, right! I'm trying to, and I know you are looking for new things that interest you (no matter how it impacts me or Linda). I hope you find a lot of opportunities and options! Love, Kate Quotes from "Today's Gift - Daily Meditations for Families" (You gave me this book.)

Blue eyes Mariska and Carolscha. That party was one of the first times we had really gotten together and been silly. Also reminds Judi of Hospice and how excited she was to meet you and realize that here might be a new friend..and indeed that’s what happened. Thanks for always remembering special days like “start of school”, birthdays, trips and more. We always love receiving the “PHONE CALL”. You are a very thoughtful friend. Workshop? What workshop? What great hotel in Winslow? What coffee shop? WHAT Gotuje Pierogis. YUM..Mary loves sharing the Polish thing with you. What a wonderful time sharing your anniversary. We were all long term couples that night and can appreciate how much you have shared together. Always bringing people together thank you for sharing your home and friendship and the warm comfort of your home. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New years, birthdays, cards, “growing older group” and more. SO.when is YOUR retirement party????? We need Cosmos’s soon. Just a nice reminder of our great trip to Sedona with you and Linda. Caryl, in the car, again we love hearing the stories about your many travels. Caryl, We love your spontaneity and your “spur of the moment” energy, your desire to discuss all sorts of topics and to explore relationships. You love to just meet up and be with whatever is in that moment. You have a great spirit and we love you. Happy 60th Birthday! Mary and Judi

We love your spontaneity and your “spur of the moment” energy, your desire to discuss all sorts of topics and to explore relationships. You love to just meet up and be with whatever is in that moment. You have a great spirit and we love you. Happy 60th Birthday! Mary and Judi

I know that I have lived long enough .. long enough to know that I do not know: long enough to see that life and death are not interested in the finished product that has “turned out” this way or that way; but are concerned with the eternal process of being and becoming; the process of growth, transition, regression, transformation: a process where the unexpected is forever breaking through the pattern of the seemingly established, and at every turn of the river of life new vistas may be opened enabling the soul to glimpse that country where ultimate mysteries unknown and unknowable abide Frances G. Wickes (c. 1955)

Dearest Caryl, I can't believe you have reached this milestone, I remember when you turned 50. I am wishing you the happiest of birthdays and I am praying that you will give to the universe in this leg of your life as beautifully as you did in the previous part. You are a tremendous spirit and I am so proud to call you friend. I speak often of you and your gift of listening, your ability to get folks to believe that you really care about what is troubling their soul. I am sorry I have no pictures to share from your time at ECHO/Nathan Hale but trust me, I have tons of great pictures in the photo album in my mind of special times laughing, crying , bitching and talking. Your energy ( I learned about that from you) is bright like the sun and you deservce every great thing this new decade has to offer. Happy, Happy Birthday! Love Always, Jennifer

Please relay to Caryl my appreciation of her kindness and thoughtfulness. When she worked for the ECHO DHH program, she always took time to meet and talk. And when she moved she always reconnected when she came back to Chicago. Happy Birthday, Caryl!!!! Sincerely, Mary Ellen Mauro

The Depth of friendship . How much it means to us . Depends, at least in part, upon how many parts of ourselves a friend sees, shares and validates. Lillian Rubin

Dear Caryl . You meet your friend, your face brightens ---you have struck gold. Kassia (c. 840) Thanks for being my friend. I read somewhere that “we all let people into our lives, but you will find that really good friends, let you into your own.” And I feel that way about having you for a friend. When I am with you I somehow learn more about myself ..What a wonderful gift you have and share with others. I am honored to have you as a friend. 60 is great . Enjoy!!! Love, Barbara

CARYL, My Friend Sixtieth! The big 60! I for one am glad that it is finally here. This is one birthday that needs a lot of attention. It is the one birthday that started years ago... We are ready now to memorialize it, to celebrate the passage and then to spend time to come down from it. Will it take another year to complete the birthday? It wouldn't be authentic unless it did! I don't know when I first knew you. I think you may keep track of that better than me. Was it when Laurie Hoffman "fired you"? I don't know. Perhaps I inherited you from my buddy, Leslie or did I try to save you by passing you on to Leslie? I don't know. What does it matter? You are like the Energizer Bunny...you keep going and going and going.... will you return, and keep going and going? I am happy that our friendship developed beyond the work place. I think we worked well together even though I am such a "German" and you are "Out There". Despite the generalizations that go along with those categorizations, I have a special spot for you. You know that I respect your knowledge and your quickness in sizing things up. I can always count on you to give me perspective. I may not always accept it but I respect your forthcomings and your ability to say it straight.

I have enjoyed all the years we have spent sharing our families in our talks. With both of us growing up as baby boomers in large Catholic families, I have always felt that we shared an understanding of those growing up experiences. There was nothing like it, right? Our experiences were not totally the same but we did have many common factors. You deserve a great amount of thanks from me. I would not have become the person I have without the insights you have shared with me and taught me. I have so many fond memories of these times. I often chuckle when I think of something that comes to mind, especially when we have ever tried to plan anything! Thank you, my friend, for your friendship, support, and care over all of these years. Happy Birthday!! Love, Donna
