20: Lessons from the Geese As geese flap their wings, they create an uplift for the bird following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range then if any bird were to fly alone. (You have provided that common direction and sense of community; You have shown us how to get where we are going more quickly and easily because we are traveling together and on the thrust of one another.) If we have as much sense as geese, we will stay in formation with those who are leading where we want to go, and we will be willing to accept their help and follow their example and give our help to others. (You have led by example and taught us how to be strong and accomplish our goals, but just as importantly- how to help others accomplish their goals, too. You have taught us how to collaborate and become better because of the sum of our parts.) When a goose gets sick or lags behind, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help protect it. They stay with it until it is well enough to travel again. (You have never left us behind- you have always been here for all of us, constantly encouraging us and helping us through difficult times. You have helped us find our way, to reach our goals. Your support has not wavered.) When the lead goose is ready, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies at the point position. (But rest assured, we are ready to take on doing the hard tasks and sharing in the leadership because we have learned well from our leader.) So geese- who would have ever thought?? No wonder the geese have chosen Robinson as their home! They recognize a true leader, teammate and mentor-one that generates trust, respect, unity and power within a team. Sandra, thank you from all of us. We are so lucky to have had this chance to work with you, learn from you and get to know you. We are all better because of you and your leadership. Ann Fry
