BC: Pure cobalt is a steel-gray, shiny, hard metal that is insoluble in water

FC: Cobalt

1: Cobalt is a brittle, hard, transition metal with magnetic properties similar tot hose of iron.

2: Cobalt is a natural element found throughout the environment.

3: Cobalt has also been used a treatment for anemia, because it stimulates red blood cell production.

4: Limited data are available on the carcinogenic effects of cobalt.

5: Cobalt can be measured in the urine and the blood, for periods up to a few days after the exposure.

6: Cobalt is used to make superalloys (alloys that maintain their strength at high tempertures approaching their melting points) and in pigment manufacture.

7: A study found average cobalt levels in drinking water of 2 micrograms per liter, but values up to 107 g/L have been reported. The average daily intake of cobalt from food is estimated to be 5 to 40.
