FC: By Anna, Alexandra, Casey, Maya, and Ashton | Deconstructive Criticism

The Point of Deconstruction - expose contradiction (internal opposition) - discover complex, unstable, and complex foundations -personal way of applying societies teaching of language

Preconceived Conceptions (Ideology) - unaware of them -built into our language -can be applied to Marxism and Feminism that try to make us aware of oppressive roles

Meanings | -are created when we distinguish the difference between one word and all others. | colour is colour because we know it is not shape or smell or feel | trees are trees because they aren't the clouds, grass, or a bicycle | - one should take into consideration what a word is excluding when it is said

Contradiction | meanings that are opposites of one another

 - Sentences appear straight forward. Example: This tree is big. -Big compared to what? -Is the speaker surprised at the size of the tree? | Ambiguous Language

B I N A R Y | - terms with opposite meanings -one term is superior to the other - helps determine ideologies

1)How can we use the conflicting interpretations a text produces, or find ways in which the text doesn't answer the questions it seems to answer, to demonstrate the instability of language and the undecidability of the meaning? 2)What ideology does the text seem to promote –what is its main theme-and how does conflicting evidence in the text show the limitations of the ideology? We can usually discover a text's overt ideological project by finding the binary oppositions that structure the texts main themes. | Critics ask...

How To: Deconstruct | Step 1: | Step 2: | Find Binary Opposition | Consider Every Possible Interpretation

Step 3: | Step 4: | Step 5: | Demonstrate the way they Conflict | How Conflicts Sprout More Interpretations | Undecidability of Text
