S: Easter Vacation April 24-27, 2011

FC: Live well, laugh often love much.

 2011

Easter was at Bug and Anna's again this year. Since we didn't have a lot of money available for a vacation this year, we decided to add a few days to the trip for a mini-vacation. We arrived the day before Easter and had dinner out with the family at that great BBQ place by them. The next morning we did Easter baskets and presents in the hotel room. That seemed easier this year because Mike doesn't believe in the Bunny anymore, so I didn't have to worry about him realizing that I was bringing the stuff with us in the car! After breakfast we headed for Bug's house for the Great Easter Egg Hunt. Last year he hid over 100 plastic eggs in his house and yard. He called before Easter to ask if he should do that again or the kids didn't. | care. I told him "are you nuts? Mike has been talking about it for weeks!" So he hid them again. There were fewer this year, but we just limited the number the girls were allowed to find and let Mike do most of the hunting. The Next day we headed for the cabin we rented and searched for "diamonds" at the Herkimer mines. That was more Mike's day, but we all had fun. The seond day we went for a hike along the Earie canal, which was more Kris's day (lot's of picture taking opportunities). We had a good time, a lot of laughs, and enjoyed a not-so-expensive vacation.

Mike hides by the door while the baskets are laid out. You need to adjust when in a hotel room

"The Easter Bunny came by today and left surprises along his way. Colorful eggs are all around. With baskets in hand we search the ground. Hiding in places here and there Easter eggs are everywhere."

 The Hunt Is On

Kris loves Bug and Anna's library

There are nearly 8 years between them, and yes, Mike can be a pesky little brother, and Kris can be a bossy big sister. But I love to see the moments between them. It gives me hope for when it is just them. I want him to look up to his big sister and always know he can count on her. And I want her to feel protective of her little brother, yet proud of his accomplishments. Go through your lives side by side my precious ones. | Side by Side

It's a beautiful day, don't let it get away.

So we stayed at a cabin at the Herkimer Diamond Mind Campground.. At the mine you use a hammer and chisel to wack away at rocks to try to find these little "diamonds". Mike was hoping to find a big one worth a few hundred dollars, but it wasn't to be. We had fun trying though.. That's Fred in the middle holding the first find of the day, which I zoomed in on, top left.

Kristin's new camera has a panaramic setting. | Kris told me to pick up some big rocks to show off my new martial arts mucles

Kristin, of course, also saw it as an opportunity to take scenic pics. No surprise there.

Here's some shots of the cabin. They teased me because I've always loved log cabins, so they thought this was my ultimate dream home. Wood everywhere. The kids had a small room with a built in bunk (top pic on right) which sounded great, except in practice the bunk was a bit coffin like for Mike's comfort. We finally decided to let him sleep on the living room couch.

 Mike hanging at the campground

The cabin had a fire pit. We toasted hot dogs on sticks, then made smores. We had such a great time hanging out by the river playing with fire.

Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world.

So on day two, our hike day, we woke to a drizzley rain. We took our time getting done, then headed out anyway. There wasn't much else to do around there anyway. We got lost finding the path. Lee (our GPS) seemed to be going in circles, but eventually we found it. We were all in a rather silly mood. Mike was hungry. I told him we would eat when we reached the picnic benches by the rocks, so he kept trying to go faster and faster. Kris started playing "America's next top model" so we all joined in. It was,all in all a very silly day.

 What is that?

 Loose something? or.....

Finally lunch time. Mike ran ahead to the bench so he could eat. For the record it was only like 11:15. After lunch, more posing, and, of course, holding up the rocks.

We may not have it all together.... But together we have it all.

"Are you kids paying attention? That's a lock of the Earie Canal. You know, like we learned about in History this year. Is anyone looking? Hello, history, right here in front of you." "Yes Mother, we see, Erie canal, lock, yup."

See the steps on the top right? Both Kris and I had a real hard time walking down them. I don't like being able to see the ground so far below. Once we crossed over, we began to walk back on the other side of the canal.

 it's always spring in a mother's heart

So that's the water fall we saw from the other side. The kids took off their shows and waded in. They're nuts, it was freezing. After the hike we went to some antigue stores and ate some ice cream before heading back to the cabin.

So during the night a massive rain storm came through. The next morning the river had risen at least 2 feet. The tree on the right was on dry ground the night before. The kids and I went for a walk to check out the deluge. The island that was in the middle of the river was almost completely under water. Then it was homeward bound. Great vacation!

See the geese? They were riding the river like an amusement park ride! It was really cool.
