S: Walking Together in Love

Education For Ministry Seminar 2009-2010 St. James's Church, West Hartford, Connecticut

EFM PRAYER Lord God, we pray together for your blessing on our ministries. Grant to each of us the patience to wait for your call, the perseverance in preparing for it, the perception to recognize it when it comes, and the courage and strength to answer it faithfully. This we ask in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Letting Go Lord free us from our fears and attachments. Give us strength and courage as we turn to you in hope, trust and faith. Open our eyes and hearts to see your guiding hand, and feel comfort in your presence, and to let go and be still in your love. Amen

Morning A Traditional Celtic Prayer This morning, as I kindle the fire upon my hearth, I pray that the flame of God’s love may burn in my heart, and the hearts of all I meet today. I pray that no envy and malice, no hatred or fear, may smother the flame. I pray that indifference and apathy, contempt and pride, may not pour like cold water on the fire. Instead, may the spark of God’s love light the love in my heart, that it may burn brightly through the day. And, may I warm those that are lonely, whose hearts are cold and lifeless, so that all may know the comfort of God’s love. AMEN

“I will not leave you orphaned” Father God, Here I am. Lord Jesus, Here I am. Holy Spirit, Here I am. Weave your eternal love through my life. Wrap your arms of love around me. Wrestle away my fears with Your Presence Emmanuel, Here You are! Amen

The Potter’s Prayer Creator and molder of our lives, We thank you for the gift of your firm and tender touch. Shape us according to your will so that we may become useful vessels. Let us be your tools as you shape others. Forgive us when we consider ourselves complete. Reshape us when our imperfections and rigidity threaten to overwhelm us. Oh Potter, keep us ever in your hands. Amen

I seek your presence, O God, not because I have managed to see clearly or been true in all things this day, not because I have succeeded in loving or reverencing those around me, but because I want to see with clarity, because I long to be true and desire to love as I have been loved. Renew my inner sight, make fresh my longings to be true and grant me the grace of loving this night that I may end the day as I had hoped to live it, that I may end this day restored to my deepest yearnings, that I may end this day as I intend to live tomorrow, as I intend to live tomorrow.

A Prayer for New Beginnings God of our every moment Help us to see in each new sunrise the continuous availability of your grace. Support us through our fears and doubts and sustain us in each new beginning. Amen | St. Mary's Abbey, York, England Founded 1055, partially destroyed 1539 under Henry VIII, Dissolution of Monasteries

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away." And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new " And He said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true." Then He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. The Revelation to John, Chapter 21: 1-7

A Prayer for the Son We believe You are the source of our sunrises, the dawn of our salvation, We pray as the sun rises, we will rise with you energized and forgiven. Let us never take your faithfulness and power for granted. Help us to share the new life that comes with every sunrise. We pray this in the name of Christ whose glory fills the sky. Amen

“I will not leave you orphaned” (amplified version, WL) When all the things that make my life secure Are snatched away, or emptied of their power To stabilize, and I am left alone, Like an orphan dreading what may come And finding no one with the least concern, I recollect your promise, and return: Lord Jesus, I am here, Weave your compassion through my wounded heart; Dear Father, I am here, In arms of love enfold me, strength impart; Blessed Spirit, I am here Inspire me, wrest my mind from terror’s grasp, Till I can recognize your face at last And know, Emmanuel, that you are here. December 14, 2009 | Le Bon Pasteur Benedictine Monastery of the Mount of Olives, and Editions Choisir, Geneva

Immortal, Invisible, God We are the visible expression of your love. We feel your Presence through the Holy Spirit. Help us to hear your call, To taste and see your goodness, To smell the fragrance of your creation. Thank you for the grace of faith to see into your mystery. Help us to make Christ visible to others in the works we do in your name. Amen

We are made in the image of God, you see. Are we the visible of the one invisible? God breathed into thee and man and woman came to be. Body, soul, and holiness too. But Adam separated us from God you see. We lost our moral way Oh How we've gone astray! But God's mercy saved us so. God's love is renewed each day, so that we may imitate God and pray . Male or female, none that were begat. God is Spirit and divine at that. Three in one---one in three Body, soul and divinity. We love because God is Love. We are God's reflection, from above | Jesus, one of the three He came to save us from evil you see. Although we were just like him in body. He was the visible of the three. Even though we could not wear his crown Nor carry his cross without a frown. His salvation was a gift to us. Those who chose the likeness of thee Were made in the image of God you see. | John Arnott

A Prayer for New Life Dear God, Open our eyes, minds and hearts to the possibility of new life in You. Give us the courage to say "Here I am" Amen | St. Kevin's Labyrinth, Glenalough, Ireland

O Wisdom from above: Day after day, we face Choice after choice: Between good and bad; between Bad and not-so-bad; Between good and good. Often we are tempted by what seems to be The easier way, The safer way, The way of self interest. Often we are bound by fear and compulsion. Free us to choose wisely, Counting the cost, Weighing the promises, Imagining possibility, With courage born of trust In your unconditional love. Amen | DISCERNMENT | Detail, Heilig-blut-Altar, St.-Jakobs-Kirche, Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Carved by Tilman Riemenschneider, 1505. Christ praying in Gethsemane

We are what we love. If we love God, in whose image we were created, we discover ourselves in him and we cannot help being happy: we have already achieved something of the fullness of being for which we were destined in our creation. If we love everything else but God, we contradict the image born in our very essence, and we cannot help being unhappy, because we are living a caricature of what we are meant to be. Kyrie Keep me, above all things, from sin. Keep me from loving money in which is hatred, From avarice and ambition that suffocate my life. Keep me from the deadly works of vanity And the thankless labor for pride and money And reputation. Thomas Merton, A Book of Hours

A Prayer for Miracles We believe God is Author of miracles. We pray for eyes of faith to recognize the miracles in our lives and in creation, And so be living examples of the faith we profess, And extend God’s inclusive love to all. Amen

In the great lights of the night sky and its unbounded stretches of space I glimpse the shinings of your presence, O God. In the universe of my soul and its boundless depths I look for emanations of your light In the silence of sleep and the dreams of the night I watch for jewels of infinity. In the silence of sleep and the dreams of the nights I watch for the shinings of your presence.

 Lucerne, Switzerland

Thanks be to you, O God, for the strong arm of those who have given me shelter in my life, who loved me from the womb and carried me as a child, who guarded me like watchful angels and wept when I was in pain. Thanks be to you for the men and women whose passion for the poor is undying, whose prayer for the oppressed is tender, whose defense of the wronged is fierce. Grant me the strength to cry for justice, to be patient for peace, to be angry for love. Grant me the grace of a strong soul, O God, grant me the grace to be strong.

Magnificent Magnificent I was born I was born to be with you In this space and time After that and ever after I haven't had a clue Only to break rhyme This foolishness can leave a heart black and blue Only love, only love can leave such a mark But only love, only love can heal such a scar I was born I was born to sing for you I didn't have a choice but to lift you up And sing whatever song you wanted me to I give you back my voice From the womb my first cry, it was a joyful noise ... Only love, only love can leave such a mark But only love, only love can heal such a scar Justified till we die, you and I will magnify The Magnificent Magnificent Only love, only love can leave such a mark But only love, only love unites our hearts Justified till we die, you and I will magnify The Magnificent Magnificent Magnificent U2
