FC: The Tell Tale Heart By Edgar Allen Poe | Retold By: Ms. Romash

We lived in such a quiet apartment complex: everyone was nice to each other but kept to themselves, the lawn was always cut and flowers planted, and people always said "hello." I guess that is why we were all shocked by the horrible events that took place that ordinary night and to such a sweet and nice old man. What did he ever do?

The old man and Edgar lived with each other for years, although I hardly ever saw them together. They seemed like two people who just tolerated each other and their living situation. I guess that is why - looking back on everything - I should have suspected something... ANYTHING

It was about a week before it all happened that I noticed things had changed - though I did not say anything! I started seeing Edgar and the Old Man going various places together - to the park, to the diner, food shopping, etc. Edgar was all of a sudden being so nice and helpful to the Old Man.

Each night for that last week, their apartment was so quiet - almost too eerily quiet. I didn't hear the late night television shows that Edgar used to blast until the wee hours of the morning and it was always dark as black with just one single dim light on.

But all that kindness ended suddenly!

I guess it was the 8th night since I had noticed the change in Edgar and the Old Man's relationship, when I was awoken around midnight with a single LOUD shriek!

I immediately called the cops and waited anxiously for them to arrive. | Strange noises came from the apartment like the sound of wood being chopped. I wanted to run into the apartment but my fear paralyzed me as if my legs would not allow me to get out of the bed.

For an eternity I waited and waited and waited, and finally the cops arrived. A calmness rushed through me. The cops were so relaxed and who could blame them - this was such a peaceful neighborhood. I told them about the shriek and strange noises and they rushed to the apartment to see what happened.

I had no clue what truly happened that night, that is until today at the Old Man's funeral. | It is here that the police told me about crazy Edgar and his confession of the violent killing of the Old Man. All over his weird eye.

Even though there is nothing I can change now, I often wonder if the Old Man would still be alive if I would have said something. Just one thing about those 8 days and nights I watched Edgar. THE END
