FC: Flappers of the 1920's: | a new kind of girl! | by Aran McDermott

1: What is a Flapper? | Ever heard the song, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun? Well that's basically what being a flapper was all about. It was a time when young women rebelled against the requirements of being a "lady" by cutting their hair short, bringing the hemline of dresses up, and drinking. It was time girls had a chance to party. | Right before World War 1 started the Gibson Girl was very popular. She wore her hair on top of her head and loose dresses. She participated in men's sports like golf or bicycling. When World War 1 started the Gibson Girl was forgotten and the flapper was the new rage.

2: The 1920's was when a new kind of music was introduced, it was fast paced and exciting, and it needed dancers. This music was called Jazz. Jazz was a very important influence in flapper fashion. Since the music was fast and jumpy young ladies decided to pull up the hemline of dresses and make the dresses looser. Coco Chanel was a designer who created a lot of clothes for flappers. | Flapper Style | To finish off the flapper look, hair was cut short and sometimes curled in towards their face.Flappers would also wear hats and wrap long pearls around their neck.

3: Attitude was Everything | Flappers were all about having a good time, from dancing to smoking to drinking. They usually lived in big cities where they could work but at night explore the jazz clubs and speakeasies. Flappers went about with a carefree attitude and they did whatever they wanted. Eventually, when the Great Depression came along the flapper died out but was never forgotten.
