3: Commodore Matthew Perry signs Treaty of Kanagawa, marking beginning of nation's trade. | National laws are changed so that all children born abroad to US parents are guaranteed American citizenship.
4: Kansas-Nebraska act is signed, a bill which organizes the two states on basis of popular sovereignty. | Gadsden Purchase is signed, from Mexico to the US now the southern tip of Arizona & New Mexico.
