FC: The Battle of | Antietam | By Gary Casey

1: The Civil War was the outcome of the South's attempt to secede from the Union. It had more US fatalities than WW I, II, Korea, and Vietnam combined. All together, over 620,000 Union and Confederate soldiers died.The Civil war is also when Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation. It began in 1861, and didn't end until 1865 -- four long, bloody years.

2: Where was it?? | The Battle of Antietam was located in Washington County, Maryland

3: When was it?? | It was fought on September 17, 1862.

4: Who won? | Twelve hours later, with over 23,000 soldiers dead or wounded, the battle ended. The Union managed to finally push back the Confederacy as what would be known as the bloodiest battle in American history.

5: Leaders | The battle of Antietam was led by (Confederate) General Robert E. Lee and (Union) General "Stonewall" Jackson. Both generals survived, though thousands of others perished in the fight.
