BC: the end

FC: A smile as sweet as spring | Cassie DeFrancesco's Photography Portfolio

The final product of my journey through completing a fifth course.

 The Power of One

This project was about carrying out a photo-shoot with a person and in these photos he/she could only have one prop. This prop had to be in each photo and in the case of my project, the prop was a rose. This assignment was really fun because it was so open to creativity. My model and friend, Victoria, was able to dress up in different costumes and look all pretty, like an actual model. I thought the theme 'love' fit well with the prop she used. I edited only some of the photos because I thought some looked good straight out of the camera. For example, the picture to the left that is in the top right corner is completely unedited. I love the focus and blurred background. For the picture in the top left corner, I cut out Victoria and edited the background with rainbow colours in photoshop. I then put Victoria back in the picture and Voila. When all seven pictures that I chose for the final product were put together into a powerpoint, I saw a story arise. The story showed love appear into the character's life, and then she was left waiting for her love to come back and when love didn't come back, she finally walked away.

 Strike a Pose

Strike a pose was a very interesting assignment, because it was the first time I had to take initiative and be a leader. I'm usually very passive around others so this helped me get out of my comfort zone. This assignment was about taking pictures of people in different poses. An outline with different poses was given to me and I had to recreate them, as closely as I could to the original photo, keeping lighting and the number of people in the pictures in mind. I didn't do any drastic editing to my pictures, just some adjustments to contrast and saturation in photoshop. A difficulty I faced was trying to get all of the participants to co-operate. Some people were very impatient and wanted me to take the photos as fast as possible. This didn't allow me to get multiple pictures for error room. What I liked was seeing the end product seeing all 20 of my photos in the powerpoint. Ultimately I think I was able to to get what I thought the poses should look like with my subjects from my head to reality.

 A Person Divided

The action figure photo for this assignment was not initially going to be in the final product. I wanted to experiment with photoshop and get use to it since this was my first project where I had to use it. So I found a random toy, which was my Thumper figurine, and took pictures of him from different angles. I put the picture together and liked it so much that I decided to submit it. This project was about combining multiple pictures, typically 4, to create one picture that seems 'impossible'. For the 'impossible many' and got my friend Aliya to model. She followed my direction and because the experience went smoothly, I was able to focus more on the editing. I cut out the outline of Aliya in every picture and then inserted her on to the background photo. All of this was done, of course, in photoshop. This was the same deal with my mom. She was very co-operative and willing to help me with this assignment. It was definitely through this project how I got familiar with photoshop. I was able to learn how to cut out objects with no extra pixels around the outside and make scenes by doing this.

 Bucket List

The Bucket List assignment really made me think about things that I wanted to do in my life before I die. I had never really thought about this in depth, except with the one time we did in biology, but even those things were not very deep. The pictures to the left are just a sample of some of the things I want to do, like meeting Darren Criss, seeing the Eiffel Tower and learning violin. I took each of the photos of myself, by myself. I used a remote to take the picture at the right time. I then cut myself out and inserted me into a picture from the internet that resembles some of my goals. I learned a little bit more about myself and how precious life is because there are so many things we want to do and we may not even have the time to do them so we shouldn't lazy and wait around. I really like how the photos turned out, seeing myself doing or seeing something that I've always wanted to do or see :)

Wow was this certain assignment ever tricky. I spent a total of 16 hours working on this picture. What ROYGBIV was about was that we were supposed to find a picture from the internet with at least five colours from the rainbow. Then we were supposed to take pictures of every colour form the rainbow and create a colour palette. In photoshop we were supposed to shrink these coloured photos into squares and recreate the picture we found form the internet. Because I made my squares so small it took a while to cover the picture. I also brightened or darkened my squares to match the main picture even better for the shaded or lightened areas. One thing I learned from this is that after 600 photos have been put into a photoshop file, photoshop typically starts to run snail slow. I also learned how important shading is to differentiate between a 2-D and 3-D picture. I really liked this assignment though, because the finished photo is just so worth it.

 Photoshop Creations

This assignment was super, super fun because I learned what different things photoshop could do. I learned all about its cool filters which make awesome affects, and when two or more filters are combined, they make the photo even more awesome. This assignment involved putting two or more photos together in a creative way. We were supplied with the photos to play around with. For some of the photos I cut out little pieces, like flowers, and placed them into a bigger main picture. I did this for two of my creations to the right. For another, I merged two together with each being at a transparency of 50%. The posterize filter with the football picture works well together because it looks unreal. I became even more familiar with photoshop while doing this project, and this experience will most likely help me with future encounters that I will have using photoshop. I liked learning about and seeing the different filters when they came into effect. I also liked the fact that I didn't have to take any pictures for this assignment :) Although I love taking pictures...

 Weldon Newspaper

'Weldon Newspaper' was an assignment where I was supposed to create a newspaper including any stories that occurred in the past school year. I picked some really memorable events to talk about in this newspaper. These events were when Craig Kielburger came to speak at the school, our IB Biology class travelling to the science centre, the Free the Children benefit concert and fun times with the jazz ensemble. To make my newspaper look like a newspaper, I used Microsoft Publisher, which really helped my orientate everything. I included information about the pictures that followed the 5Ws rule, plus 'how'. I didn't edit any of the photos included in the newspaper itself. I once heard from a wise photographer that anyone who wants to go into photography needs to know how to write a newspaper, since most photographers start out in photojournalism. This assignment helped me to better understand how to write a newspaper and the kinds of things involved in setting up the structure of it.
