FC: One friend, Two Friend Big family, Small Family | by Heidi Heimerl and Sammy Hindin

Heidi and Sammy have been friends for a long time. They enjoy doing things together and comparing their VERY different families. Here is a story about them.

Then: This is an old family photo from 1995. (From left to right. Back: Diana, Mom, Tammy, Dad, John. Front: Charlotte holding Shannon, Heidi, Bridget holding Krystal, and Joseph.) | Now: Taken December 2008. (From left to right. Back: Dad, Mom, Charlotte, Diana. Middle: John, Tammy holding Kaija, Heidi, Krystal. Front: Joseph, Xander, Shannon, and Bridget.)

Then: This is an old family photo from a camping trip at King Mountain. | Now: This is a recent family photo from a spring break trip to Homer. Nothing much has changed! | Our families are very different sizes.

This is a picture of my house. There are not many trees in our yard, but the neighbors all have trees | The view from the front door provides a wonderful look at the street and whatever happens to be walking by.

Here is a picture of our house and the view from our deck. You can see Pioneer Peak Mountain through the frosted branches. | Our houses look very different.

Couch space is a hot commodity in my family. Throughout the years, we have learned many techniques to get our space spot on the couch., either by force or use of sneaky techniques.

The only person I had to fight for a seat on the couch was my dad. Now he has his own chair. | If you walk inside, different sights will meet your eyes.

Sharing rooms is the norm in my family. We only get our own room if we are the next to leave the house. I shared a room with every member of my family at some point except for two, my dad and my brother Joe.

I am an only child; until college dorm rooms, I always had my own bedroom. It always seemed too big for just me. | The places we sleep are different too.

Every year, my mom tries to grow a garden, but moose tend to ruin it. However, every year we end up with a few plants, particularly my family's favorite, raspberries.

My parents love the gardens in our yard. Some of our beds produce beautiful flowers and some yield delicious vegetables. | In the summer the our gardens grow different things.

The main vehicle used during my childhood was our fifteen passenger van. We used it to drive to Florida in 1995 and we still have it parked in the driveway today.

It's too bad we can't all fit on the motorcycle. Usually we opt to travel in our Subaru Forester. | The cars we drive are opposites.

My family do many activities together. We play entire games of soccer in our front yard, hike the butte, build dams and catch frogs at Eklutna Lake, go canoeing in lakes and swimming in lakes and pools. During the winter, we go ice skating, sledding, and skiing.

My family is small, but we like to spend time together. Sometimes we'll go out to lunch together, or on a picnic at our favorite spot. | Our families do different things for fun.

Every summer, my family would go to Fairbanks at least once to participate in the Midnight Sun Soccer Tournament. | Every year for Independence Day, my family would go camping in Seward. While there, we would play on the rocks in the bay and run Mount Marathon Afterwards, we would camp in Nikiski, where we would play in the mud flats, the waves, the big rocks, and swim in their pool.

Since my family is small, we would usually try to sneak south in the wintertime. Some years we would meet my grandfather in Hawaii, and other years we would go to our favorite place in Old Town San Diego. | Our families relax in different places.

I have played soccer every since I was really little. I began to play basketball in 3rd grade. I began playing the flute in 5th grade and I ran cross country in high school. | In our free time we enjoy different things.

I used to spend my summers at our family farm in MN. Whenever we would rodeo they'd call me "Smokin' Sam from Palmer, Alaska." | One of my biggest hobbies is playing music. Here is a band I play in.

Christmas was always crowded at my house. It gets even more crowded every year as new loved ones join my family. | My Family's Christmas Tradition: On Christmas Eve we do a outside winter activity, then we go to church, and look at Christmas lights on the way home. For dinner, we have breakfast for dinner in shifts, since there isn't enough seats. Then we open presents from Santa.

My family celebrates TWO winter holidays! First we celebrate Hanukkah. On one night we try to have a party with potato latkas and games. Then we celebrate Christmas with a few family friends. Our big meal is usually seafood on Christmas Eve. | Our families celebrate winter holidays in different ways.
