2: ORDINARY WORLD Rocky is living in Philadelphia as a low-rent boxer who works as a loan shark. He is shown as living in a run-down apartment in a bad neighborhood. While he has a shady job, he still shows that he has a good heart and the desire to box. In the Ordinary World stage, heroes are shown in average, ordinary settings for them, which fits Rocky perfectly. The hero is also seen as having traits that will later be developed. In the beginning, Rocky lacks confidence and drive for success, as evidenced by Mickey's comments at the gym and the loss of his locker. He is fine with his life of prize fighting and working on the streets.
3: CALL TO ADVENTURE Rocky's ordinary world is changed when Apollo Creed's opponent is injured, and he chooses "The Italian Stallion" from a book of Philadelphia boxers. This event interrupts Rocky's ordinary world and forces him to consider taking on a task that would stretch his confidence and abilities.
4: Refusal of the Call At first, Rocky says he will be a sparring partner but refuses to accept the challenge because he feels that he is an inadequate match for Apollo Creed. He does not believe in his abilities and claims that it would not be a good match.
5: Crossing the First Threshold When Rocky agrees to fight Apollo Creed, he has crossed the first threshold. The television interview when that decision is made public is the first step toward the ultimate fight. Rocky's awkwardness and seemingly poorly matched skills also highlight the magnitude of the "journey" he will have to go on in order to "go the distance" with Apollo Creed.
6: Tests, Allies, and Enemies Rocky has to endure exhausting training in bitter temperatures in order to prepare for his big match. His clearest enemy is Apollo Creed, but his friend, Pauly, can also be an enemy at times due to his self-serving nature. His allies include
