Ordinary World | The movie starts out with a news broadcast segment in which the host of the show is interviewing this woman, Alice Krippin. She's there speaking for the company she works for. | She announces that they've successfully created a cure for cancer with a 100% success rate. The vaccine was widely used all over the world.
Call to Adventure | The vaccine successfully cured many of cancer, but after time the vaccine transformed into a virus. The virus went viral and was a danger to everyone. As a result, cities were being evacuated to safety. When the time comes for Robert Neville and his family to leave, he has to ask himself whether or not he is willing to stay in the infected area to research the cure. He decided that if he could help, he would and that he would meet his family later.
Refusal of the Call | Neville doesn't seem to show any refusal of the call. Neville does appear anxious and emotional while he's with his family still though. This could mean that he did want to go, but he felt obligated to stay in order to fight the infection.
Meeting with the Mentor | Because of the apocalypse, Neville is forced to trust in his own advice. With the lack of other humans, there's only a couple things that could be an influence to him. One being his dog, Sam, who protects him, keeps him company, and teaches him by watching out for him if he makes a mistake. The other being music by Bob Marley. Marley must be a big influence on Neville because his daughter's name was Marley.
Crossing the First Threshold | As he was watching his family take off in a helicopter, Neville was only planning on staying in the city for a couple weeks. All of his plans changed very quickly after that though. Another helicopter that was taking off lost control and collided with the one carrying Neville's wife and daughter. After that, Neville had nothing left from the normal world and he dedicated his life to finding the cure.
Tests One of the tests Neville faces is that he has to be home by sundown to avoid the infected. Another trial is that he has to keep pushing himself to continue his research, even after failing many times at creating an anti-virus. | Allies Sam, his dog, helps Neville hunt for food as well as protects him. Anna and Ethan (left) are two survivors who came across a frustrated Neville trying to slaughter a group of the zombies. They saved him from certain death and brought him back to his home. | Enemies Basically everybody in the world has been turned to angry dark-seeking zombies. Neville has a world full of enemies.
Approach to Innermost Cave | The main reason that Neville could survive for so long is that he doesn't go out at night or in dark places in the daytime. Many of the infected hide from the light in these dark places so they would be very dangerous to explore. One day while hunting, Neville and his dog were chasing an animal who had ran into an old skyscraper. Sam ran in after it, and after a slight pause, Neville also ran in to save her.
Ordeal | One day while driving down the city streets, Neville notices a mannequin standing on the sidewalk at the end of the road. The infected are making the head of the mannequin move as if it was alive. When he gets close enough to inspect it, he gets caught in a trap set by the zombies. The trap knocks him out and he doesn't wake until it's almost dark. When he wakes up, Sam protected him from infected dogs until he made it to the car safely. | In the struggle, Sam was injured severely and couldn't be saved. In his anger and sadness, Neville attacks a group of the monsters at night. | The mob of them eventually overcomes him leaving him helpless.
Reward | Neville attacks the zombies knowing that he would eventually be overcome by the horde. By facing death, it's clear that Neville has given up. The zombies eventually flip his jeep over. As the monsters break in, other survivors find and save him. Because of the crash, Neville loses consciousness as the zombies flee. When he wakes up, he finds Anna and her son, Ethan, making breakfast. Neville appears to be frustrated at first, but Anna calms him down. For the first time, Neville seems to be relaxed.
The Road Back | After spending so much time believing that he was the last remaining human, Neville doubted Anna's claim of a safe sanctuary without infection. Because of his doubts, Neville doesn't want to search for the safe haven. Even though he doubts others being alive, he no longer wants to give up anymore. He decides to continue his research.
Resurrection | The night after the rescue, Neville realizes a horde of angry zombies had followed them to the house. Even after Neville's bombs and bright lights, the monsters break into the house. With no other choice, everyone retreats into the research lab where they can seal themselves off. In the lab, they find that a test subject is human again, meaning Neville created a cure. Neville gets a sample and they get behind a glass barrier. Neville knew that the glass would break soon, so he gave the cure to Anna and told them to hide in the vents. With the possibility to save the world, he sacrifices himself to kill the mob.
Return with the Elixir | Anna and Ethan successfully make it out unharmed in the morning. They leave in order to search for the safe zone. In the end, they find it and are welcomed through the gates. At the sanctuary, the cure would be multiplied. Neville's sacrifice wasn't in vain and his legend would be heard by everyone.
