FC: Immigration from Mexico | By: Dulce Martinez
WHY THEY CAME... | There are many reason why immigrants from Mexico have left their homeland. Some immigrants have come over here in search for a better life, better future, and more freedom. Immigration happens for many reasons such as economic, political, family re-unification, natural disasters, poverty or the desire to change the way you live.
PREPARATION TO LEAVE | Immigrants couldn't take many things with them when they were leaving. The few things they took were water, food and clothes. Some would risk bringing their family with them. The things they miss the most are their family, friends, and the homes they grew up in.
THE JOURNEY TO AMERICA | Man Usually came first, after they settled here they would save money to bring the rest of their family. | Long, crowded boat rides from their homeland to America. | In order to be allowed into America they had to go through an inspection center. US inspectors decided whether or not each immigrant could enter. Many immigrants were sent home for diseases or for not having money.
WHERE DID THEY SETTLE? | Most immigrants would settle in California, New York, Texas, Florida, and New Jersey | Many immigrants from a particular origin tend to live in areas where others from the same origin live. Others settle where ever they can find a job.
HOW WERE THEY TREATED? | Many immigrants were treated horribly and discriminated. Often they have had to take the hardest, worst paid jobs, and they have also had difficulty assimilating entirely into society. When some of the immigrants were discriminated some would try to make peace, others would ignore the discrimination, and others react to it . Reacting to it didn't mean they would use violence they would do things such as tell their real life experiences. | Many of the women would get jobs as maids or doing pieceworks home. Men would get jobs such as farming, building houses and buildings, working in factories, overall they would get any job they could to support their family.
