FC: The First Printing Press

The First Printing Press Written by: Addy Goff In honor of Johann Gutenberg.

Once upon a time, in a land known as Mainz, lived a boy named Johann Gutenberg. He was born into a good family and was taught to read as a child.

As he grew older, he moved with his family to a town called Strasbourg. He studied at the University of Erfurt. Then, he became a part of the goldsmith's guild. This is a group of very important people. Johann was also a metalworker.

At this time, books were very rare. There were no machines that printed books, and so people had to copy them by hand. Books were so precious that they would be chained to the reading tables in the libraries. Also, a book would be worth as much as a house.

Johann was interested in books and wanted to find a way to make books more available to people. | A unique way of copying had already been developed in China and Korea. In this process, the words needed for a certain page were cut from wood, inked, and then pressed on paper. Johann decided that this would be more helpful if the wood letters could be rearranged to make different words.

While Johann was working on his invention, he began to run out of money. At the time, this seemed like a failure to Johann, but then he met Joahann Fust. Fust was excited about what Johann was doing and agreed to lend him money.

Johann thought that everything was going well, but Fust seemed to have another idea...

Johann continued to work on the invention, but Fust was becoming impatient and sued Johann. Fust won the lawsuit and so all of Johann's tools and work were taken away from him and given to Fust.

With all of the work that Johann did on the printing machine, there was little work left for Fust to do. Soon, a Latin bible was printed using movable, metal type.

This bible is known as the Gutenberg bible. This invention was the first machine to use movable type to copy books, and was called a printing press.

The Gutenberg bible was so valuable, that today it is worth $100,000,000! That is a lot of money!

During this time there were struggles with religion. The printing of the bible allowed people to have their own copy of the bible, which helped spread Christianity.

Gutenberg was not recognized for his accomplishment at the time. He was poor when he died in 1468, and never profited from the invention.

Most of all, without Johann Gutenberg, books would not be common as they are today. He changed the way that people all over the world live their lives. He may not have known it then, but Johann was one of the most important people in history. THE END.
