1: JRR Tolkien was born January 3rd, 1892. His full name was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.
2: Tolkien's father originated from Saxony, who wanted his son to be born into Catholicism.
3: Because the Tolkien family was so poor, Tolkien's mother passed away from diabetes on November 14th, 1904.
4: As a child, Tolkien created his own languages. He later used these languages in his books when he started writing.
5: Tolkien met Mary Edith Bratt at the age of 16, who he married on March 22nd, 1916.
6: Tolkien achieved a first-class degree from Oxford in June of 1915, and returned as a professor in 1925.
7: Tolkien created a group of Oxford friends called "The Inkling," where he became close friends with another famous author, CS Lewis.
8: One of Tolkien's students left an exam page blank, where he wrote "In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. He then had to look up what a hobbit was, because he didn't know what it was.
9: Tolkien had 4 children whose letters from Santa he had published in his book, The Father Christmas Letters.
10: When he was alive, Tolkien taught undergraduates at Oxford and wrote 26 books, including his famous series, The Lord of the Rings.
11: Humphrey Carter, a family friend, was the only person who has written an "authorized" biography of Tolkien; the author was very wary of giving out information to biographers.
12: Edith died on November 22 1971, Tolkien died September 2, 1973.
13: Tolkien and Edith are buried together in the same grave in the Catholic section of the Wolvercote Cemetery
