FC: Their Eyes Were Watching God | by Kristin James

Hurston uses many different types of writing to get her point across. She strives to give you an experience of really living and being in the time period. A southern dialect is being used to create a feeling of being in the time. Imagery is also used. Imagery is when an object is used to represent an object, feeling, or anything else.

Imagery as a reflection of... | JANIE

Janies' marriage with Joe is like a head rag because it was so restricting.

Throughout "Their Eyes Were Watching God" Janie was involved in many marriages. Her second marriage was with Joe who was very restricting and treated her like a slave. He made her work in the store wearing a hair rag, covering her long, beautiful hair. This hair rag is a good example of imagery because it represents how her marriages really were; unfair, restricting, and slave-like. " "

Janie is like a flower in bloom because she has so much natural beauty. | " "

Janie is like a flower because of her natural beauty. The men in the town notice her for her long hair and sculpted body. Although she has to cover and hide herself at some parts in the story, she is still like a blossoming flower. " "

Janies' life is like a iguana because its always changing. | " "

Janies' life can sometimes be like a iguana because its always changing. For example, one minute she is living with a high class mayor. There she is expected to be civilized, and act of higher class than everyone else. But then other minutes, she is out on the fields helping Tea Cake work. So she changes lifestyles like she changes clothing.
