Laura's favorite possessions were her microscope, a box of 64 Crayons, and her library card. Eloise by Katie Thompson, illustrated by Hilary Knight, was one of her favorite books. Laura always wanted to be a writer.
At age 15, Laura decided she wanted to be fashion designer like her sister. She applied to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and ended up hating the fashion department. During her last semester, she took a children's writing class and had an assignment where she had to write and illustrate a book.
For the assignment, Laura wrote about the tallest girl in 3rd grade. When she tried to get it published, four companies rejected it until McMillan bought it. Laura went on to write many children's books and even coauthored two books with her sister, Alice.
Laura is married to a man named Larry. They currently live in California and collect antiques. Her favorite three things to do are curl up on the couch with a book when it’s raining, meeting new people, and getting to see the dinosaur bones at the museum.
The idea of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie came to her on a long, boring car trip from San Francisco to Oregon. She never gave up when nine companies turned the book down, and it was finally published by Harper. Eventually, Laura wants to write screenplays and adult fiction.
