16: Stanley Yelnats had to go to jail or Camp Green Lake. He chose Camp Green Lake
17: He is very surprised when he gets there. There is no lake and no green. All he has to do is dig holes for eighteen months.
18: The warden is very unfair. She says it builds character. Stanley knows she is searching for something. He tries to find what she's searching for.
