It was Fall. Jenny knew what this meant was coming, her first day of school. She was very nervous. Her parents had tried to tell her that school was fun but she didn't care what they said, she was still scared. School was starting tomorrow and she couldn't stop it from coming, no matter what she did.
The next day, Jenny woke up and put on her new dress her mom had gotten her for today. It was pink, which was her favorite color. She also had shiny, new, black dress shoes. When she was done getting ready, her mother and father drove her to school, they had a hard time getting Jenny to leave them and go into the building but they eventually got her inside. The teacher, Ms.Beam, was very kind and very pretty. Jenny instantly liked her the moment she saw her.
After her parents left, Jenny met the other kids. There was John, Sylvia, Hazel, and Chester. Chester didn't talk much, when Jenny said hi, he walked away. Chester kept to himself when it was play time. At nap time he slept in the corner of the room, instead of sleeping in the middle of the room with everyone else. No one tried to talk to him after that.
Right before lunch time, Jenny went to get her lunch her mother had packed for her, but she couldn't find it. She looked in her backpack and it wasn't there, so she looked around the room and still couldn't find it. When Ms.Beam found out about Jenny's lunch, she asked the other kids if they could share a little bit of their lunch with Jenny, Chester was the only person that raised his hand. Jenny was surprised that no one else was willing to share their lunch with her. That was when Jenny realized that Chester might not be trying to be mean, maybe he was just shy and scared like she had been.
At lunch Chester and Jenny talked about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Chester said he wanted to be a firefighter. Jenny asked Chester why he slept in the corner at nap time. He said that it felt warmer in the corner than in the middle of the room. After that Jenny asked him why he hadn't played with anyone at playtime, Chester said that he had been scared that the other kids wouldn't like him. It was then that Jenny discovered that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
