FC: MINING | By.Marco

Mining is when people go in mines and get minerals that are needed.

There are two ways to mine.

 Surface and underground.

A type of surface mining is open pit mining. Open pit mining is when you dig a big hole in the ground to get the minerals needed.

An example of underground mining is shaft mining. It's basically just digging tunnels that are connected to each other and then collecting the minerals.

A real life example of an open pit mine, is the Diavik diamond mine. It is located in the NorthWest Territories near Yellowknife. Every year, millions of carats are found.

An example of a real mineshaft is the Empire Mine. It is located in Grass Valley, California. Currently, the mine is abandoned but when it was being used, it would contain mainly gold.

A long term effect of mining is that it pollutes water.

Another long term effect is that it destroys or ruins animal habitats.

A short term effect is that it pollutes air.

Another short term effect is that mining ruins the area around the site.

Mining is not always safe, when mining, you face the risk of things falling on top of you or getting lost

At least 3 mining accidents happen each year in the Lightning Ridge area, in Australia
