1: Mining is when people go in mines and get minerals that are needed.
2: There are two ways to mine.
3: Surface and underground.
4: OPEN PIT MINING
5: A type of surface mining is open pit mining. Open pit mining is when you dig a big hole in the ground to get the minerals needed.
6: SHAFT MINING
7: An example of underground mining is shaft mining. It's basically just digging tunnels that are connected to each other and then collecting the minerals.
9: A real life example of an open pit mine, is the Diavik diamond mine. It is located in the NorthWest Territories near Yellowknife. Every year, millions of carats are found.
11: An example of a real mineshaft is the Empire Mine. It is located in Grass Valley, California. Currently, the mine is abandoned but when it was being used, it would contain mainly gold.
12: A long term effect of mining is that it pollutes water.
13: Another long term effect is that it destroys or ruins animal habitats.
14: A short term effect is that it pollutes air.
15: Another short term effect is that mining ruins the area around the site.
17: Mining is not always safe, when mining, you face the risk of things falling on top of you or getting lost
19: At least 3 mining accidents happen each year in the Lightning Ridge area, in Australia
