My name is Esban Gibby and this is my journey to America from Mardy, Wales.

I am leaving my beloved homeland of Great Britain. I hope to find wealth and prosperity in America.

I sailed on the Lusitania it is the largest ship in the world. We departed from Liverpool on September 19th, 1913. I kept a diary on board the ship. It was a very long and hard journey.

Here are some exerts from my diary.

Finally! We arrived at Ellis Island on October 31st, 1913

I had to fill out a detention card upon arrival. This was my first official documentation of my immigration to America

We were given a map of the lower east side of New York City and I was now faced with the challenge of finding a place to live. Many immigrants were living in apartments called tenements. These were not always the best homes but they were a place to live.

The living conditions in the tenements were bad. the streets and the buildings were always overcrowded. The tenements were thrown up very quickly to accommodate Americas rapidly growing immigrant population. There were no fire codes so the buildings were often death traps.
