BC: "Justice will not come to Athens until those who are not injured are as indignant as those who are injured." -Thucydides

FC: Thucydides

This is where I was born-Athens. It is a beautiful city; however, I was exiled from it because I was slow. I was the commander of a fleet and I didn't get my soldiers to Amphipolis in time to defend it before Spartans came and captured it. I must find something to do now that I have no duty. | ?

I have decided to write down the events of the Peloponnesian War.I believe the war started because of Athens trying to be better than Sparta. As I have wrote down in my book,"What made the war inevitable was the growth of Athenian power and the fear which this caused Sparta."

The Athenians have sent a hundred vessels and they are voyaging to capture new places. Such places are Sollium, which was Corinth territory, Astacus, and Cephallenia (they captured this island without force). Near autumn the Athenians attacked the Megaird. They returned to Athens and heard that citizens that were at home were in full force at Megara. This is the largest army the Athenians ever had!

It is winter now. The Athenians are having a funeral for all of the soldiers who have died. This was part of the ending of his speech: “Turning to the sons or brothers of the dead, I see an arduous struggle before you...now that you have brought to a close your lamentations for your relatives, you may depart." This war shouldn't have happened. These people shouldn't have died. Is the power worth it?

A plague has come to Athens. The symptoms were fevers and redness and inflammation in the throat or tongue and in the eyes. The plague caused sneezing and hoarseness, hard coughs, upset stomachs, and other horrible effects. Maybe Athens deserved it for trying to be better than Sparta. Athens believes that they are the highest. However, they need to see that this is not true. All city-states should be equal and are equal.

During this war the Athenians were going to Pylos and I suppose that they weren't feeling very good about the fight they were going to have because they needed encouragement. Their general had spoken a speech that made the Athenians more confident so they could go up against their enemy. Athens may think that they always are self-assured, however them needing encouragement shows they may not always be how they seem to be.

One of the armies fighting for Pylos, the Lacedaemonians, has surrendered to the Athenians. The Athenians held on to the Lacedaemonians until the next morning. When the Athenians were ready to sail, they took their prisoners with them. Some were Spartan and some Spartans and Lacedaemonians were killed. Did the Athenians do this to show power? Do they still believe their truth? Truth is being and accepting what you really are.

The Athenians are, again, sailing around demolishing city-states and killing people by the hundreds. If the Athenians want power then they need places to rule over, people to control! If they keep killing everybody off then there may be no one left except those who fought with them. They are NOT handling this war well.

The Sicilians are in peace. After a fight betweeen two cities, Hermocrates, a very persuasive man, gave a speech to Sicily. This is part of it: “That war is an evil is a proposition so familiar to every one that it would be tedious to develop it.” I agree with him. War does not have to happen all the time. Yet, here we are. In the midst of a war the Athenians are savagely winning.

Years later the Athenians went Sicily. They needed supplies, money, and a place to stay at different cities. They accomplished these tasks either by the cities agreeing or by force. Another reason they went around on their “expedition” was to show the power of Athens and how happy they were to have such wonderful friends and allies. They couldn't leave without really doing anything so they set up a base and harbor for the army

The Athenians have gone to a city called Melos. They wanted to control the city. However, they had refused to give in. The Athenians tried to negotiate with the Melians but they did not want to give up their freedom. Before the Athenians left the conference, in a way defeated, the Melians said that they would not deprive a city of freedom. I believe the Melians have just put the Athenians in their place. Wonderful!

The Athenians have been surprised! A fleet had gone by them without them knowing and they abandoned sieging Eresus and went to Hellespont when they had heard what had happened! The Athenians must think they are fools! Once again they are made their true selves- humans who, though they are great at most times, make mistakes and miss things. This is true of all humans, being seen by their true nature.

Notes: | Many people would agree with Thucydides truth and it may change their view on the world. Not being haughty make a person social interaction easier whether it be at school, work, or any place else. However, there may be some (those who think better of themselves) who won't care. Thucydides also believed that war will repeat itself in the future. Unfortunately, he was correct.
