1: Philip Pullman is a famous author that is known for the His Dark Materials series.

2: He's won many awards including the Astrid Lindgren award and International Reading Association Children's award.

3: When Philip Pullman was a kid he moved several times. He grew up in three different continents. (Europe, Africa, Australia) The reason Pullman's family moved so often was because his dad was in the air force.

4: One day while in Africa his family received a telegram from England saying his father had been shot and killed. This changed Philip's life.

5: Growing up, Pullman wanted to become a poet, but he later changed his mind to become a teacher.

6: Pullman decided to attend Oxford University. After getting a degree a he started teaching middle schools.

7: Eventually he got tired of teaching and switched over to be a librarian.

8: In 1970, Pullman married Judith Speller. She convinced Pullman to return to teaching. He ended up teaching Greek Mythology in middle schools for 12 years. This was what inspired Pullman to write crazy stories in different dimensions.

9: Pullman's first book was the Haunted Storm (1972). He isn't proud of it though and often denies that he wrote the book.

10: h | Eventually Pullman decided that he was ready to quit his job as a teacher and stick to writing books. This helped Pullman write more successful novels.

11: Pullman's next big hit was The Ruby in the Smoke (1985) He got the idea from a postcard he bought. The postcard had a girl searching for her family.

12: The series that made Pullman famous was the His Dark Materials series. The trilogy has sold over 15 million copies. (Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass)

13: Golden Compass was made into a movie in 2007. It didn't do well in the box office so they never made a sequel to the movie.

14: Other books by Philip Pullman are: Galatea, Count Karlstein, and Clockwork.

15: Golden Compass Summary | An orphan named Lyra is living in Oxford when her friend Roger is kidnapped. Desperate to find him she travels to London with the help of Mrs. Coulter who she met on the way.

16: Eventually Lyra finds out that Mrs. Coulter wants to harm her so Lyra runs away. Lyra later finds an alethiometer but doesn't know what it does.

17: Lyra finally finds out what the alethiometer does. She can predict the future and the past. With the alethiometer she finds out where Roger is being held.

18: Lyra has to fight through armored bears to get to Roger.
