Pueblo (Native American Tribe) - Page Text Content

The Pueblos are a tribe with one main belief. They believe in Kachinas, ancient spirits who make clouds and rain for their people. The Pueblos believed that the Kachinas once lived among the people, but left because they felt they weren't getting the attention they deserved. The Pueblos had festivals in which they would ask for rain to help their crops. They would dance around in masks and costumes and they usually chanted. | BELIEFS

The image above shows a picture of Kachina dolls. Kachina dolls are dolls based on the Kachinas (ancient spirits). These dolls were given to children. So during festivals when the Pueblos dressed like the dolls the children would not be frightened.

The Pueblos were mostly vegetarians, but ate meat when it was available. The Pueblos ate a lot of corn. Almost 80% of there diet included corn. They grew many other crops too, such as: onions, chillis, tobacco and peppers. | FOOD

The Pueblo would eat meat when it was available. If they did, they often hunted: rabbit, gopher, squirrel, mountain lion, deer and antelope.

HABITAT/HOMES | The Pueblos, instead of living in wigwams, tepees or igloos, lived in buildings named after themselves called Pueblos. These buildings were usually two stories high. Pueblos were usually made out of dirt or sand. They had small windows and doors because of the high temperatures. They would get inside by climbing on ladders and getting in through the roof. Before they had these buildings the Pueblos usually camped in caves.

The Pueblos lived in the Southwest. They were located towards the bottom of Arizona. These warm temperatures helped their crops.

TOOLS/WEAPONS | The Pueblos used different tools and weapons. The main tool they used for food was a grinding stone. This was commonly used by women. They would grind corn with this tool. The tool that was used for hunting rabbits was a boomerang shaped stick. To kill the rabbit they would throw it at them.

The pueblos also created utensils and jewelry.

The women in the Pueblo tribe were the ones who made the pottery. The designs used symbols and pictures based on nature and the world around them. They included: animals, flowers, sky, rainbows, plants and clouds. | ART

The Pueblos wore a variety of clothes. The men in the tribe wore kilts, sashes (sometimes), and ankle-high moccasins (type of shoe). The women wore cotton or wool dresses, with one shoulder free, and also wore moccasins like the men. | CLOTHES

The Pueblo tribe is a great tribe with many beliefs, styles and customs. The Pueblos are an interesting tribe that has been fun to study. I hope you enjoyed my book! | PUEBLOS
