2: Michelle Kwan was born on July 7, 1980. in Torrence, California. She is the third child of Chinese immigrants from Hong Kog.She began figure skating when she was five and began serious training when she was eight. She practiced three to four hours a day. Michelle went to Soleado Elementary School, but she began home-schooling when she was thirteen. | Childhood and Education

3: She graduated from Rim of the World High School in 1998. She then attended UCLA for one year. She transferred to the University of Denver 2006. She graduated in 2009 with a degee in international Studies. She is currently attending Tufts University working on a Masters degree in International Relations.

4: Michelle's family had difficulty paying for training and when she was ten, a member of the Los Angeles Figure skating Club offered her assistance, so she moved her training to Lake Arrowhead. | Michelle with her coach, Frank Carroll. | Training and Competition

5: In 1991 Michelle and her sister began training with famous coach, Frank Carroll. | Holding her final pose! | Michelle was among the top American figure skaters for over ten years She competed in two Olympic Games, winning a silver and bronze medal. She invented new skating moves and was admired for her artistry and emotion while skating.

6: Michelle started competing in 1992. At first she competed as a junior, but she quickly passed the test to compete at the senior level. She competed in her first Olympics in Nagano Japan in 1998, where she won a silver medal.

9: After Michelle stopped competing she had time to explore other interests. | Michelle with President George Bush

10: Life After Competing | In 2006 Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice named Michelle a public diplomacy ambassador. She will represent America around the world. She has continued in this position under President Obama. She is currently in graduate school studing international relations.
