1: Geography -It borders both the Carribean Sea (to the east) and the North Pacific Ocean(to the west) - Four volcanoes, two of them active, rise near the capital of San Jose in the center of the country; one of the volcanoes, Irazu, erupted destructively in 1963-65 Climate The nation's climate is classically divided into two major seasons: rainy and dry. The dry season runs from January through May and the rainy season from May to November and December. Mild in the central highlands, tropical and subtropical in coastal areas. How It Affects Food Growth: When temp. increases: 1) lengthen the growing season in regions with a relatively cool spring and fall; 2) adversely affect crops in regions where summer heat already limits production; 3) increase soil evaporation rates, and 4) increase the chances of severe droughts. Change in rainfall amount and patterns: Changes in rainfall can affect soil erosion rates and soil moisture, both of which are important for crop yields.

2: Main Agricultural Products: - Coffee, which is the country's oldest agricultural product and has been exported since the 1790s.

4: History - On September 18, 1502, Christopher Columbus made Costa Rica the final stop on his farewell tour. - Numerous subsequent Spanish expeditions followed, eventually leading to the first Spanish settlement, Villa Bruselas in Costa Rica in 1524. -Costa Rica joined other Central American provinces in 1821 in a joint declaration of independence from Spain - The indigenous people have influenced modern Costa Rican culture to a relatively small degree, as most of these died from diseases such as smallpox, and mistreatment by the Spaniards.

5: Beliefs: The Catholic heritage remains important in everyday language and culture. Cristiano is used as a synonym for "human being." Even those who are not religious like to have a religious medallion or picture of a saint in their cars or homes. Costa Ricans demonstrate their Catholic faith mainly at baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

6: Christmas: The most important Christmas tree in Costa Rica is the tree of the Children’s National Hospital. People arrive there the first day they light up the tree to be with the sick children. This brings hope to the sick children and makes them happy in spite of their situation Easter Week: The first activity in church is the “Domingo de Ramos” where the priest gives everyone a blessed palm leaf, which is reminiscent of the day Jesus walked into Jerusalem and people greeted him with palm leaves. The following Sunday is the last celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, three days after he was crucified.
