This is me. My name is Edward Thomas Smith, I live with my Father and Mother, My mother bought me this journal
In 1851 (yesterday) a man named Edward Hargraves found gold in Bathurst which is in Australia. Lot's of people rushed off to the gold fields in search of gold!
I asked Mother and Father if we are going to go and they said that they will wait and see if any more gold is discovered. Lots of my friends have already rushed off to the gold fields, I am disappointed that I can't go too. It sounds so exciting!!!!!
My friend Roger sent me this letter. He is in the gold fields right now. I wish I were there with him. | Dearest Edward, How are you? I am at the gold fields right now. We arrived yesterday and brought all our provisions from Ballarat. I must say the ship journey was
terrible. We got horrible food like cauliflower soup and biscuits with maggots in them!! In the gold fields it is so exciting. While Mother and Father dig I mainly play with the other children. Guess what? There are children from all over the world, but I am not allowed to play with them. I have got to go. Yours sincerely, Roger.
Finally more gold has been found in lots of different places. My parents say that they will take me to the gold fields and that we will go to Ballarat where Roger is!!!
This is a picture of the | ship we're going to the gold fields on. Her name is the Wave Princess.
We are on the ship, It is as terrible as Roger told me. We get mouldy food with maggots in it!!!
We have just got off the ship, My legs feel all funny when I walk because I haven't been off the ship for months!! | It is quite a way to walk until we get to Ballarat, I am starting to feel a little homesick | We have arrived in Ballarat and there is no place to stay! All of the inns are full. At last we finally found somewhere.
In Ballarat Before we go to the gold fields we need a lot of supplies. We have to get some flour so we can make bread to eat with boiling water | We also need to get tea because most of the water on the gold fields is unclean and carries diseases. If we boil the water the germs and bacteria will be burnt away making the tea safe to drink
We also need some mutton so that we have enough protein We have to eat the mutton quite soon otherwise it will go off in the sun. | We need a tent to sleep in as there are no inns. We also need blankets just in case it gets cold during the night.
Now that we have all we need we are ready to walk to the gold fields, It is about a day's walk, I am very excited. Mother told me that when we get to the gold fields I have to look out because lots of the children have stepped on mine shafts and fallen down them, This mistake could be fatal.
Finally we are at the gold fields! There are lots of children here, Some of them aren't from England, Mother says I am not allowed to play with children who aren't from England, I think that is unfair but I dare not disobey Mother.
We have to go to sleep because we have a big day tomorrow because we have to set up for the digging, and then the day after that we are going to start digging! I hope Mother and Father will let me help them dig, The only problem is that I haven't seen Roger yet but Mother said I would see him tomorrow.
In the gold fields there are two different types of mining - Alluvial and Shaft. Mother said we would be doing alluvial mining.
These are my friends. They are doing alluvial mining, Alluvial mining needs tools. To do alluvial mining you need a shovel, pick, pan | or a cradle. A cradle is easier to use. Alluvial mining can be done by one person but it is easier if you have a team of two or three to share around the jobs. The worst job is getting the water as you have to walk an hour to get to it and an an hour back carrying a bucket full of water, This is my job.
Shaft mining is more expensive than alluvial mining but you usually | get more gold from it. For shaft mining you need, a bucket, windlass, cradle | and a pick, For shaft mining you need a team. Shaft mining takes longer then alluvial mining
We have set up our alluvial mining station, We have all of our equipment but I think the cradle is the best, I must go to bed now. Goodnight.
Today the most exciting thing happened! Police came rushing through the gold fields looking for miners without a permit. If anyone didn't have a permit they
would be taken straight to jail. I asked Mother if we had a permit and she said "No Edward, we did not have enough money at that time." So we went with some other miners, to some rocks where we all hid. | It took about an hour before the police went, dragging along with them all of the unfortunate miners that had been caught without a permit, "Poor things", Mother had said.
We have just found gold!!!! I am so excited but we can't tell anyone because there are so many thieves in the gold fields and our gold would surely get stolen.
We also can't tell anyone because we don't have a permit and if you don't have a permit when you find gold you don't get to keep it! I think that is unfair because we put so much work into finding this gold! But the good thing is once we leave New South Wales, we can exchange our gold for money without a permit!
We are on the ship getting ready to depart. It was sad saying goodbye to our friends but Mother brought me some rather grand paper don't you think?
We have arrived home. I feel so happy! Guess who | was waiting for us? Roger! He wasn't as fortunate as us though | We traded our gold in today and we got 5 thousand pounds for it!! I am rich!
My story about the gold fields has finished, We really liked it in Australia and Mother and Father have decided we will buy a farm and move back to live in Australia.
THere are quite a lot of things that helped me get the things that i needed here they are.... Mrs Pemberton and mrs mckean | Books........ What happened after the goldrush by Michael Dugan.
