7: I chose to do Homelessness for assignment because this social problem is inevitable in our society. There were six pictures chosen to illustrate this problem that is going on worldwide. I believe this social problem goes along with the functionalist perspective. The functionalist perspective says that not everyone should be equal in a society because inequality is necessary for this problem. Even though I do not believe there should be homelessness, I believe not everyone in a society can work; there has to be a downside for the upper side to work. According to the functionalist perspective, each person has a value and that value is given to each by the society. For example, in order for charities to be open and working, there has to be a poor class installed in the society. If homelessness was eliminated, I believe thousands of charities and organizations would be shut down. So, there has to be people working for the homeless to have a standard on the society. The first picture I have chosen is of a man lying down on the streets simply because he is homeless. When I first look at this picture, it looks like this homeless man has nowhere to go but to sleep on the sidewalk. He looks like he have no showered for a while and looks really tired. In second picture, a homeless person holds a sign to get some money. It seems like this person would do anything such as get a job or work for someone. In my opinion, at least the effort of trying to get a job is helping the society know that this person is not lazy. This helps people going by know that if he/she is able to find work, they can be off the streets. The next picture shows the nature of humankind. A little kid gives a homeless person food to eat. From the functionalist perspective, I see this as to why we need both sides. We need someone to help the homeless. In a society, it is not possible to not have poverty/homelessness. I chose the next picture because this homeless man is from a different country. This shows homelessness is everywhere not just the United States. The last picture caught my eye because it is of a mother and a child. In my opinion, this is extreme because I do not think any child would have to go through this. Homelessness is an unfortunate status in society but for a society to work and build, it needs all sorts of classes.
