FC: The Last Vacation
This past spring break Jamie and her family spent two weeks in their condo in Florida. Jamie's sister and her arranged to have their friends meet them down in Florida to spend vacation with them. They had so many plans and activities arranged to do while they were in Florida. The vacation did not go as planned, all because of one decision.
February 18, 2012 6:30 am, Jamie was at the airport boarding a plane heading to West Palm Beach, Florida. The flight was supposed to take off at 7:15 am, the flight didn't take off until 9:30 am. After two hours of just sitting on the air plane waiting for the pilot to get on the loud speaker and prepare us for takeoff, Heather was so bored. At this point Jamie was devastated because Jamie was missing out on 2 hours of Florida fun!
Jamie and her family finally arrived in Florida and within the first hour Jamie was on the beach soaking up the sun! After a few hours of tanning and playing in the ocean they walked back up to the condo. That evening they went to Jamie's favorite restaurant. The next morning around 8 am with no sunscreen they walked down to the beach for a full day filled with fun! After being in the Florida sun for a straight 9 hours with no sunscreen Jamie was as red as a lobster. Later that night on their way home from dinner they had to go to the drug store to purchase some aloe for Jamie's sunburn!
On the third day Jamie's sister, Nicole and Jamie wanted to go parasailing. They had seen so many people in the sky everyday and they thought it looked like so much fun. Jamie and Nicole finally convinced their mom to allow them to go! They left the condo around 10 am and got into the boat around noon. Jamie's mom, Aunt, brother, and cousin all came for the ride! Two riders went before Nicole and Jamie, they got to watch someone else do it up close before they got launched into the sky!
It was finally Jamie and Nicole's turn to go parasailing. The adrenalin was rushing through their veins. The boat driver and his assistant were tucking them into their seats and attaching the girls to their harnesses. 5, 4, 3, 2, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! There they were soaring high through the sky. The boat driver asked everyone on the boat if he should have a little fun with the girls and dunk them into the ocean, everyone on the boat thought it would be so funny. The driver put them in the water for a split second and all you could hear were scrams. it sounded like someone was being murdered. The girls were just playing around. The boat driver brought them back up to the sky, and all of a sudden they went back into the water for a little dip. This was a little strange of the boat driver to do but he was just having fun so the decided to have fun too!
All of a sudden Nicole started to scream louder than anyone had ever heard. Jamie looked next to her and saw Nicole struggling and then Jamie noticed a shark swimming below them. Nicole was kicking at the shark's nose and then Jamie just saw blood, blood everywhere. The shark had attacked Nicole and bit off her leg. The driver of the boat finally brought them back to the sky. Nicole had one leg. The shark ate the other leg. The boat driver had pulled Jamie and Nicole in to the boat. The driver raced everyone back to shore. Paramedics met everyone on the beach and Nicole was rushed to the hospital. This one accident had ruined the rest of the vacation, and the rest of Nicole's life.
They finally arrived at the emergency room, the rest of Their family that was in Florida met them there. Nicole went straight to surgery and came out 8 hours later. Her leg was gone. Nicole's left arm had to be amputated because of all the damage that was done to it. Nicole is a basketball and volleyball player, one leg and one arm was not something that would be okay for these sports. Nicole was a senior in high school at the time of the accident, and had received a full ride to Penn State to play volleyball. all of these opportunities went right down the toilet.
After about 6 months of recovery Nicole is starting to do better. Nicole has gotten a prosthetic arm and leg. She likes to think of herself as "extra normal." Nicole is now 18 years old and will be competing in this years impaired Olympics. Nicole played in a club league with other girls who have lost body parts and ones who have prosthetic body parts.
Nicole and Jamie went back to Palm Beach, Florida three years later. this had been the first time Nicole was on a beach since the accident. Nicole and Jamie started a habitat for humanity for specific sharks that are becoming extinct. Nicole had learned that just because a shark had taken away a huge part of her life doesn't mean she would let it ruin her life.
"Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game." This quote has so many impacts on this story for many reasons.Nicole's whole world was turned upside down after a shark attack. Anybody could have let that ruin their lives, never get back into the ocean, or even back on a beach. Nicole knew that if she were to do that then she would be living the rest of her life in fear. Nicole kept playing the game and now is a very successful woman in many ways.
