The Lying Friendship Written and Illustrated By LeAnn Troutner

In Northern Pennsylvania, a fox couple was blessed with a baby fox. Her name was Shoe. Shoe was a beautiful child growing up. By the time Shoe was twelve she was accepted to Crow Foot middle school, which was for only the best students. Shoe was as happy as she could be.

It was Shoe’s first day of school and she was scared. Shoe always dreamed of going to Crow Foot, but never thought it was possible. When Shoe got to school she was surprised to be the only fox there. All around her she heard animals talking. There were rabbits, wolf pups, birds, and more. But the one that caught her eye was a wood pecker called Sidney. She looked at Shoe in a strange way. Sidney walked over to Shoe and they began to talk. “Hello, my name is Sidney what is yours?” said Sidney, “Hi back at you, I’m Shoe.” “That is a weird name.” Sidney said, “I know but I love it. Sidney what is your teacher?” asked Shoe. “I am in Mrs. Mason’s room.” Me to.” said Shoe.

Soon Shoe and Sidney became best friends. But Shoe was telling lies to Sidney all the time. Shoe could tell their friendship would end one day. Shoe had planned on telling Sidney the truth some time but she did not know when. Soon enough Shoe was unsure of the truth. If Sidney ever found out Shoe was lying to her she would be hurt.

One day Shoe told Sidney that she was just in a wolf’s den. Next week Shoe said she was never in a wolf’s den. Right then and there Sidney that Shoe was lying to her. “Who are you?” asked Sidney. “Have you been lying to me this whole time?” Shoe said nothing. “I knew it. Your stories where so unbelievable. How did I fall for them?” The next minute Sidney was gone.

That night Shoe went to bed without dinner on her own. Her parents were worried about her “Honey, what’s wrong?” asked her father. “I was lying to Sidney and now she hates me.” Answered Shoe. “Why did you lie to her ?”Asked her mother “Because I wanted her to like me.” Shoe answered “I don’t know why, I like you the way you are.” Said Shoe’s father. “Honey, trying to make friends by lying will just turn around and bite you on the butt. You have to be truthful.” Said her mother. “I understand.” Said Shoe.

At Sidney’s house her mother told her not to be so hard headed. “A friendship is supposed to last forever. And you and Shoe are a great pair.” Said Sidney’s mother. At school the next day Shoe and Sidney meet up and talked it over. “I am sorry for lying to you. I just wanted you to like me.” Started Shoe. “I do like you the way you are. Can we be friends again?” asked Sidney. “I like that.” Answered Shoe. The next minute they hugged and walked off to class. The two friends learned not to lie. Lying could hurt you in different ways.
