S: The Martian Chronicles

FC: The Martian Chronicles | Ray Bradbury

-Nature overcomes humanity -Time -Evils of human society -Telepathy -Mankind colonized Mars -Mars colonized mankind -Martian culture vs. Colonization | Themes and Subjects | www.discovermagazine.com

Foreshadowing | "I dreamed there was the sky and something sparkled like a coin thrown into the air, and suddenly it grew large and fell down softly to land, and a long silver craft, round and alien. And a door opened in the side of the silver object and this tall man stepped out"(4). -Ylla K

Similes | -"The rockets came like drums, beating in the night. The rockets came like locusts, swarming and settling in blooms of rosy smoke. And from the rockets ran men with hammers in their hands to beat the strange world into a shape that was familiar to the eye, to bludgeon away all the strangeness"(78).

Imagery | "Hollow echoes sounded from under the boards as they walked to the screen door. Inside they could see a bead curtain hung across the hall entry, and a crystal chandelier and a Maxfield Parrish painting framed on one wall over a comfortable Morris chair. The house smelled old, and of the attic, and infinitely comfortable. You | could hear the tinkle of ice in a lemonade pitcher. In a distant kitchen, because of the heat of the day, someone was preparing a cold lunch. Someone was humming under her breath, high and sweet" (36). | butternutridgefarm.com

-The astronauts feel this way as a result of Martian telepathy controlling their minds. - The reader wants to believe that these feelings are real because of the comfortable, detailed atmosphere of this scene. -The detail brings the reader into connecting that he/she is human and the perspective they should take while reading the book. -Ray Bradbury later criticizes the reader in order to make connections and enforce change.

Symbolism | -"They pass their insanity over into us so that we see their hallucinations too. Telepathy. Autosuggestion and telepathy"(27). -Martian telepathy is one of the only differing "mental" characteristics they have from humans.

-"He saw the men walking out of the rocket. Wait for me! he cried. Don't leave me here on this terrible world, I've got to get away; there's going to be an atom war! Don't leave me on Earth" (31-32)! | -Mars represents an escape route for mankind from their mistakes. -Realistically, when this book was written, there was no migration to Mars, no escape from mankind's consequences.

www.mardigrasoutlet.com | Martian masks represent the unemotional, mature, calm, almost naive behavior of the Martian race.

www.unicist.net | In the final chapter of the novel, the Thomas family burns the last copy of the world map when they reach Mars. This symbolizes complete departure and neglect of planet Earth and the wrongs committed by mankind, for there is no sense in remembering it.

www.eastwilliumberry.net | Trees symbolize familiarity and comfort for mankind's moving to Mars. On the other hand, they may also stand for the contamination of Mars and her unique resources.

www.worldpress.com | The second House of Usher represents rebellion, government corruption on Earth, and revenge upon that very government on Mars. -This man feels Mars should not have the same corruption as Earth had.

Conflicts | -Man vs. Martian -Science vs. Time -Man vs. himself

 rickhill.files.worldpress.com

Characterization | -Bradbury has to sum up the views of an entire race. -When calling-out and criticizing the actions of the reader, the author has to get all viewpoints of the story. -He uses short stories with a variety of perspectives of the colonization of Mars. -As a result, there is no stereotyping or assumptions made about any minority.

 pradheepsampath.wordpress.com

Irony | -Life began and ended with nature -Martians are again the only form of life. -Man becomes Martian. -In the end, man, the unconquerable, defeated himself.
