The Sketchbook Of Scott C. Stuart - Page Text Content

BC: Compiled by: Deborah J. (Stuart) Pipes, Nashville, TN Christmas, 2013

2: This book contains the sketches of Scott Cumming Stuart, drawn when he was 15 years old. He is the great grandfather of Henry Pipes, Sarah, Anne (Morris) and Bob Rochford, as well as many others. I was given this sketchbook by his wife, my grandmother, Sarah (Hillman), when I was 16 years old. His youthful talent has always been an inspiration to me. Scott was born September 16th, 1873, and was the only son of John and Eliza (Cumming) Stuart. His dear mother, Eliza, passed away when he was about 15 years old. He attended the United Brethren Seminary, in Sugar Grove, PA. where I assume he had a good art teacher who prompted his interest in art. In addition to being an artist, he was a baseball player and trainer for a local runner named Harry Batson, whose picture is contained within this book. Harry Batson was locally known as the “The Fastest Man On Earth!” Scott married Sarah May Hillman, in 1906, and together raised five children: John, William, Dorothy, Scott Jr., and Robert. They were married for 55 years. Scott was one of the first rural mail carriers in Warren County, PA. and delivered mail in the winter by horse and sleigh. He was a ruling elder at the First United Presbyterian Church of Sugar Grove for 37 years.

3: He died January 23, 1961 in the same bed and in the same town where he was born. I remember Grandpa Stuart as a quiet, kind, and gentle man who loved his family dearly and always had a little smile for everyone. He liked to sit in a rocking chair and carve the skin off of an apple without breaking it. He also used to chase my sister and I around on his hands and knees playing, “cat and mouse”. I dedicate this collection to my dear father, Robert “Bob” Stuart. Deborah Jean (Stuart) Pipes Christmas, 2013
