1: Book one
2: Samantha Sanders was a nine year old girl when she found Alvin Howel Dead one afternoon after school. Samantha lives with her mother in Albemarle County in North Carolina. Her father is a Coast Guard was out on a temporary sea duty and her brother Steve was at baseball practice.
3: She came into the house screaming and her mother asked "Whats wrong Samantha?" Samantha was screaming and said in a frightening voice "Mama mama mama theres a dead man" Samantha was stuttering. Her mother said "Your not making any sense" After a while Sam's mom called the Sheriff.
4: When the Sheriff got to the house, he sat down and started to ask her some questions. He asked where she went to school at and what grade she was in. For every question he asked he wrote down the answer she told him.
5: Seven Years later nobody had found out who the killer was. The incident made Sam never go in the swamp. Sam's father said "Only the Powhatan an' the one who did it knows." Sam knew he was probably right.
6: Sam's Uncle Jack and Aunt Peaches drove up to the house. Her Uncle and Aunt had to drop off their dog Buck at Samantha's house. When she got a hold of Buck, he heard a bear and went to go after it. Sam called him and called him but he would never come to her.
7: Sam went after him and when she did, her feet blistered and cut. Buck finally gave up and went back home. Soon it was finally noon and was getting dark. Sam had no place to go. She soon remembered what her grandfather told her.
8: When he went hunting, he would take camp in a tree stump. So she found a tree stump and made sure there was no termites or anything like that in it. And she climbed in it. Later around 2am, she heard a squash squash. She looked up and she saw a man carrying something.
9: She looked up and she saw a foot coming out as he walked. She wanted to scream but she she was so terrified, she couldn't let it out. When he was gone she went back to sleep. When she woke up she was hurting very badly. She walked and she thought every step was a knife stabbing her feet over and over again.
10: Soon she came along a house in the woods. She heard dogs barking and she screamed. The dogs barked and bit her repeatedly. Some how she climbed on top of the house. Soon a beat up car came to the car lot. A man came out.
11: His whole left side was burned and looked weird. He saw her and got his ladder. He said "Hold on and don't let go." Samantha said "Don't worry I won't" Finally Chip set her down and took care of her feet.
12: Sam called her mother from Chip's phone. Her mother was over joyed! "Thank God Samantha, thank God!!" Her father said. Her father had sent out a search party to look for her.
13: Chip tells Sam about how his life. How he studys bears, how he got burned and all the stuff he has went through. In the middle of the book, she thanks him for helping her.
14: She kisses him on the cheek. Chip goes home afterwards because he is not invited to stay for dinner or pretty much anything with Sam.
15: In the end of the book,Chip sets up a time where everybody is going to a auditorium to announce that the bear population is going down due to farmers killing them.
16: Everybody booed and said bad things to Chips as he got on stage and talked about it. But not Samantha, she was very proud that he did that.
17: Afterwards, Sam took him backstage and kissed him on the cheek for doing his best of trying to tell people about the population of the bears.
18: Later on, the police came to Samantha's house. He told her that they found out who killed Alvin Howel. His name was Buddy.
19: When Alvin Buddy and some other friends were gambling, Alvin won money and Buddy didn't like it. So early in the morning Buddy saw Alvin walking.
20: Buddy grabbed a weapon and killed Alvin Howel. After that, Buddy went to his home and took all of the winnings and kept it for himself.
