FC: Transcendentalism (in modern culture)
Self-reliance | In the movie Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006), the main character Borat Sagdiyev travels all the way across the United States on his own in order to marry plastic woman Pamela Anderson.
Importance of nature | The movie The Happening by M. Night. Shyamalan (2008) is about plants releasing a chemical that makes humans kill themselves because humans are doing so much harm to the Earth. This is a sort of sick and twisted way of saying that humanity needs to respect nature and take care of the Earth or we will suffer. Said suffering will obviously not be in the form of suicide-inducing chemical agents, but the consequences of abusing the Earth could indeed be disastrous.
Free thought | In the song "Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan" by Phish (2009) portrays free thought well. This is an excerpt from the song: "Gonna steal time from the faulty plan Gonna act as though I'm still a man Gonna give you one last chance to see Gonna shrug demands off of me Gonna dream, gonna dream, gonna dream, gonna dream Dream of being free" The lyrics are talking about what the singer Trey Anastasio is deciding he wants to do, therefor exercising free thought.
Confidence | The heroes in the movie The Watchmen (2009), are all perfect examples of confidence. You can't be a superhero if you aren't confident. Rorshchach was confident in his ability to win a fight against the two prisoners that were trying to kill him, and he was right in his confidence. The Night Owl II and Silk Spectre II were both confident in their abilities to defeat the muggers in the alley, and the muggers were quite literally murdered.
Nonconformity | In the movie Inglourious Basterds (2009), Madame Ada Mimieux, a woman living in Nazi-occupied France, resists the Nazis and plots to overthrow them. This is the perfect example of nonconformity, as she refused to conform with the German way of life even though most of the French decided to conform to avoid trouble. That's France for you.
