FC: Twas the Animal Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the woods, not a creature was stirring not even the hunters. The feeders were placed by the campsite with care, In hopes that reindeer soon would be there.

The chipmunks were nestled down in there coves, while visions of prairies and berries danced in there heads. And Bear in her cave, and, I in my nest, Had just settled our brains for a long cold nap.

When out on the rocks there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the nest to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a sparrow, Tore away the limbs and threw up the leaves.

The moon on the breast of the new-settled dew gave lustier of gooseberries to the animals below. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature tree and eight tiny roots.

With a little old flower, so lively and bright, I knew in a moment it must be St. Flora. More rapid than eagles her roots they grew and she whistled, and called them by name!

"Now Fona! now, Rooter! Now, Grassy, and Paul! On Sammy! On Bob! on, on Nick and Danny! To the top of the great Oak! To the top of the forest! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all !!!"

As dry as the leaves before the wild hurricane fly, When they met with an obstacle, mount to the sky. so up to the canopy the coursers they grew, with the trunk full of toys, and St.Flora too.

And then in a twinkle, I heard on the canopy, The dancing and growing of each little root. As i drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the trunk St. Flora came with a bound.

She was dressed all in leaves from her twigs to her roots, And her leaves were all tarnished and ripped from the roughness of the bark. A bundle of sproutlings she had flung on her back. And she looked like a shrub just growing her trunk.

Her eyes-how they twinkled! Her dimples how merry! Her cheeks were roses, her nose a cherry! Her droll little mouth was a bow, And no beard upon her chin.

The stump of a smaller tree she held tight in her lips, And the smoke encircled her head like a halo. She had a slim face and no belly at all.

She was slim and tall, a right jolly young spout, And I laughed when I saw her, in spite of myself! A wink of her eye and a twist of her limbs, soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

She spoke not a word, but went straight to her work, And filled all the dirt sacks, then turned with a jerk. And laying her branches to her cheeks , and giving a nod, up the trunk she rose.

She sprang to her roots gave a whistle, And away they all grew like the down of a thistle. But I heard her exclaim, 'ere she flew out of sight "Happy Floramas to all, and to all a good slumber!"
