FC: THE Vanderbilt Museum | A Visit to the home of William K. Vanderbilt II located in Centerport, New York www.vanderbiltmuseum.org By: Rebecca Gavin Exploring Museum Professions
security | Upon arrival at The Vanderbilt Museum, I was greeted by Museum Security and given directions and information. Often security is the "face" of the museum and "provide the primary contact that visitors have with museum personnel (Schlatter, 2008)."
As I walked towards the entrance to the mansion, I was impressed by the upkeep of the grounds. The museum facilities and grounds department is responsible for the care of 43 acres. Gardens and maintained lawns allow visitors to have a positive visit. | Facilities & grounds care
Retail Manager | Gift shops are a crucial aspect of museums and the Vanderbilt Museum has a gift shop in the planetarium as well as in the garden. "The museum shop is often the first or last stop for the museum visitor (Glaser & Zenetou, 1996)."
The gift shop is generally managed by the marketing department. Marketing is also responsible for promoting the museum through signage and the website. The webmaster works with marketing to present the museum consistently. | Marketing Department | "This job requires both skill and creativity...get the message out, try to provide the services, and make the customer happy (Glaser & Zenetou, 1996)." | courtesy of the Vanderbilt Museum website
The Vanderbilt Museum has a varied collection that includes the house museum and a natural history and art collection that was collected by the Vanderbilt family. | Many of the displays are the way they were historically such as the display above, while other exhibits are being developed with the help of the curator and exhibit designers.
CURATOR, COLLECTIONS STAFF & EXHIBIT DESIGNER | Today's curators work in tandem with fundraisers, educators, and exhibit developers by contributing their scholarship and creativity to exhibitions, programs, and publications (Schlatter, 2008)." | photo courtesy of Vanderbilt Museum
The Vanderbilt Museum has sculptures and murals such as the ones shown here, that would require the care of a conservator. The eagle sculpture is from Grand Central Station in NYC and is now located at the property's entrance. | conservator
visitor services | I was greeted in the courtyard by a visitor services staff member who explained ticketing and tour times. "More and more museums are doing what it takes to make visitors want to come and feel welcome (Wallace, 2001)."
EDUCATORS & DOCENTS | "Museum education is fresh everyday, it's a changing landscape (Hakala, 2009)."
Our docent Jim was wonderful and did a great job of explaining the history of the home and also added humor to make the tour memorable.
"We do like to party. We like to learn about people's interests... I like to foster that and connect it with the museum's needs (Olson, 2008)." | membership/development & special Events
The beautiful grounds and courtyards at the museum are available for special events rentals and illustrate the importance of the membership and development staff and special events staff in bringing in new audiences.
director | The museum director is responsible for the overall management of the museum and this was seen with the various aspects of communication that were at the museum. Especially with a large property it is crucial to have golf carts and phones to improve communication.
"I am directly involved in every minute detail. I have to give 100% to all areas." "All the museum directors I know consider their jobs 24/7. As a consequence, we tend to be rather near our cellphones and laptops (Schlatter, 2008)." | We had a great visit and will definitely be back!
