FC: World War II

There are four MAIN reasons for how WWII started. Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism. Militarism includes all of the leaders that were gaining power in many countries all over the world. Hitler was gaining more control in Germany, Mussolini founded the Fascist party in Italy, Stalin created a totalitarian state in the Soviet Union, Winston Churchill was a major politician in Great Britain, and the new prime minister in Japan was Hideki Tojo. All of these new leaders decided to begin building up their military. There were also two main alliances during this time, the Axis Powers and the Allies which were another cause of the war. The United States, plus Japan, Germany, and other countries' policy of imperialism was another main cause of the war. Everyone wanted to expand their control so everyone was attacking each other. The last main reason for the war was nationalism. Everyone believed their country was more powerful than the others; everyone thought they were the best and felt they needed to prove it to the rest of the world. To be more specific, the exact start of the war was caused because Germany wanted to annex Poland but the Poles refused. Britain and France said they would go to war with Germany if they attacked Poland. Germany bombed Poland anyway though, so Britain and France declared war on Germany.

When Japan bombed the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, 20 warships and 200 aircraft were destroyed. More than 2,000 Americans were killed. This shocking attack was the reason why the U.S. finally got involved in WWII; it caused President Roosevelt and Congress to agree to declare war on Japan.

The U.S. got involved in WWII on December 7, 1941. Our involvement ended after we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, forcing Japan to surrender on September 2, 1945.

The major Allied Powers were the Soviet Union, China, Great Britain, the United States, and France. The major Axis Powers were Germany, Japan, and Italy.

The major weapon, in my opinion because of the devastating destruction left by it, was a bomb. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, destroying it,to involve us in the war. We used an atomic bomb to destroy parts of Japan to end the war. Besides this, many guns were used, plus air attacks, and submarine attacks from sea.

Rosie the Riveter was the symbol of patriotic female defense workers. She represented women's capabilities to take on their husbands' jobs and step up to the plate on the home front.

After Pearl Harbor was bombed, we had to switch to a war-time economy. Production was greatly increased to make everything needed for the war. The production boom and decline in unemployment greatly helped out the economy and ended the Great Depression.
